One of the best modern Mario games is receiving an update, as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is bringing the Wii U game to the Nintendo Switch with brand-new content. Super Mario 3D World was initially released for the Wii U in 2013, where it became the second best-selling game on the system.

The Wii U sold poorly during its run, while the Switch has seen incredible success since launch. As such, many Wii U games have been ported to the Switch, in order to reach the audience that missed it the first time. Super Mario 3D World has been one of the last holdouts of the Wii U era, even though games like Mario Kart 8 and New Super Mario Bros. U have already come to the Switch and sold millions of copies.

The last of the Wii U exclusives are coming to Switch, as it was revealed in Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. 35th-anniversary Direct that an improved version of Super Mario 3D World is being released next year. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will be released for the Switch on February 12, 2021. The trailer for the game can be seen below, courtesy of the Nintendo UK YouTube channel.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is an updated version of Super Mario 3D World, which will need to have changed some of the stages, as they relied on the Wii U’s GamePad for things like creating platforms and opening doors. There appears to be a new section of the game called Bowser’s Fury, though little was revealed about it during the Direct. Cat Mario was shown sitting in front of a black bell in a ruined world, so it’s possible that Bowser’s Fury is a post-game series of difficult levels. It was also revealed during the Direct that Super Mario 3D All-Stars is coming to the Switch in a few weeks, bringing even more classic 3D Mario games to the system.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a welcome addition to the Switch’s library, especially considering how empty the Switch’s upcoming schedule is, outside of the Mario games announced today and the upcoming Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Super Mario 3D World was one of the best games on the Wii U and it had some incredible co-op platforming gameplay, which will make it an easy fit for the Switch.
