Warning: contains major spoilers for Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary 100-page Super Spectacular #1!

The Justice League is often seen as being led by Superman, but in reality, Wonder Woman is a better leader – and the Man of Steel knows it. In Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary 100-page Super Spectacular #1, the field power dynamics of the Justice League are briefly discussed. The opening narration of one of the included stories reveals that Kal-El knows the strengths of the super team, including understanding when to step back and place others in the lead.

Each hero within the Justice League is a leader in their own right. They’re all capable of taking control in emergency situations. However, when it comes to coordinating other superheroes and evaluating situations, a few of DC’s heroes stand out. Namely, this honor usually goes to the Trinity: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Batman is a natural tactician and Superman is a powerhouse, but Wonder Woman has something extra that they do not – godly wisdom.

Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary 100-page Super Spectacular #1 includes the story “Dear Diana…” which features the titular heroine giving her fellow heroes advice. It has the creative team of Mark Waid, José Luis Garcia-López, Joe Prado, Trish Mulvihill, and Clem Robins. The Flash opens up with a reflection on the beginnings of the Justice League. He states that they immediately believed Superman would be their leader – but Superman didn’t have the same belief. In fact, he deferred to Diana.

According to Flash, Superman said, “Why settle for me as our field commander? Wonder Woman was gifted by Athena at birth. I vote we listen to the woman born with the wisdom of a god.” This is likely a very good decision to make. After all, Athena is not only the goddess of wisdom, but also of war (a responsibility shared with Ares, Diana’s longtime enemy.) She is known for her prowess in battle and warfare strategy, which she has shared with heroes in mythology. In DC comics, she has also shared it with Diana. This gift is demonstrated within the story, as Wonder Woman gives out instructions for her fellow heroes and advises them on personal matters.

Wonder Woman is definitely one of DC’s best leaders, even if she often goes overlooked in favor of Superman and Batman. Many fans would likely pick either the Dark Knight or the Man of Steel as the Justice League’s leader. However, even Superman himself knows that there is someone far more capable of filling the role.

Wonder Woman and Superman are very similar. They share several powers, have been in a relationship in various series, and they are both different from the humans they share a home with. Yet Wonder Woman still has the upper hand on him when it comes to strategy thanks to her god-given gifts and extensive battle experience. She fights for the truth and seeks to find solutions that will benefit everyone to the best of her abilities, drawing on wartime strategy and Amazonian training. Wonder Woman may not be some fans’ first choice for leader of the Justice League, but Superman knows he’s better off in a different role, and no one leads with the same passion and wisdom as Diana.
