Netflix’s post-apocalyptic fable Sweet Tooth ends its first season on a major cliffhanger, but will the story continue? Here’s what we know so far about Sweet Tooth season 2’s renewal status, story details, and possible release date.
Sweet Tooth stars Christian Convery as Gus, one of the first generation of children who were mysteriously born as “hybrids” – part human, part animal. As the hybrids began to be born, the previous model of humanity was killed off en masse by the arrival of a lethal and highly contagious virus. A decade later, hybrid children are hunted down and killed or captured for experimentation, but Gus chooses to brave the world outside of his woodland home to search for his mother, with the help of wanderer Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie).
Based on the Vertigo comics by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth had a long road to the screen after its production was interrupted by a real-life pandemic. According to the first wave of reviews heralding its arrival on Netflix, it was well worth the wait – but does that mean viewers can look forward to Sweet Tooth season 2?
Sweet Tooth Hasn’t Been Renewed For Season 2 (Yet)
Sweet Tooth hasn’t yet been renewed for season 2 at Netflix, but that’s no cause for concern just yet. The streaming giant typically waits anything from a few weeks to a couple of months to assess a new original show’s performance before making a renewal decision. And viewing numbers aren’t the only factor; Jupiter’s Legacy ranked highly in Netflix’s Top 10 list for several weeks, but was panned by critics and audiences alike, leading to its cancellation within a few weeks of release. Sweet Tooth had a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% ahead of its release, which bodes very well for its chances of being renewed.
Sweet Tooth Season 2 Release Date
Sweet Tooth season 1 wrapped filming in January 2021 and released on Netflix five months later, in June 2021. Sweet Tooth season 2 would ideally need begin filming as soon as possible in order to convincingly pick up where the cliffhanger left off, since child actors age more quickly and noticeably than adults. If the series gets a quick renewal and gets the cameras rolling again towards the end of 2021, Sweet Tooth season 2 could potentially release in summer 2022.
Sweet Tooth Season 2 Story Details

Things don’t look great for Gus and the other hybrid children at the end of Sweet Tooth season 1. Captured by General Abbott and the Last Men Army, they’re held prisoner in the zoo and waiting to be vivisected in Dr. Singh’s search for a cure. Nonetheless, the season ends on a hopeful note as Gus finally finds the family he’s been searching for. Dr. Singh is already struggling with the ethics of killing hybrid children in order to find a way to help Rani, so Sweet Tooth season 2 could see Gus convincing the doctor to turn against Abbott and help the children escape. There’s also the promise of rescue from Aimee, who has teamed up with Tommy and declared a firm intention to get both of their kids back.
The mystery of the hybrid children’s origins and the seeds of the sickness have been partially uncovered, but there’s still plenty more to learn. The ending of Sweet Tooth season 1 offers a promise of more answers with the reveal that Birdie is in Alaska, where the microbes used to create Gus and the virus were originally found. With Bear now in contact with Birdie, Gus’s mother could finally get the chance to tell him the real truth about where he comes from.
