Teen Wolf: 10 Things About Stiles Stilinski That Have Aged Poorly

Stiles Stilinski is one of Teen Wolf’s best characters, but it doesn’t mean he’s without fault as the show ages.

Teen Wolf boasts a bevy of different characters who are all pretty beloved. However, at the top of many viewers’ lists is Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O’Brien). The best friend to lead character Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), Stiles spends much of the series as research and support for the McCall Pack. Despite being one of its few human members, Stiles can take care of himself.

Even though Stiles as a character has largely held up, it doesn’t mean there aren’t some things that are cringe-worthy in hindsight. With the Teen Wolf movie on the horizon, the Stiles moments that have not aged gracefully probably should not get a call back in the Paramount+ film.

10 Wanted To Go See A Dead Body

True crime is very much its own populous genre with podcasts, books, and endless documentaries. Even the most diehard true crime viewer wouldn’t go out searching for a dead body. Stiles, however, decides early on that he would like to go and see a dead body with his asthmatic best friend. This decision leads Scott to be bitten, which kicks off the events of the series proper.

While going to find the dead body is a necessary part of the Teen Wolf story, it shows a callous disregard for both the victim and family of a violent crime.

9 Sex In The Eichen House

The character of Malia Tate (Shelley Hennig) is a very interesting one. After turning into a coyote at the age of nine, she spends several years trapped in the form. Eventually, Malia is able to turn back into a human, but questions remained for viewers, especially about her mental state and her young age when she transformed.

Either way, at one point, both she and Stiles are in Eichen House together, which is an asylum in Beacon Hills. The pair end up having sex together in a questionable moment, especially since viewers don’t know whether or not Malia is in the right frame of mind to consent at the time.

8 Tried To Handle The Nogitsune On His Own

In Teen Wolf season 3B, Stiles becomes possessed by a dark kitsune known as the Nogitsune. After several incidents, including his father almost getting blown up, Stiles checks himself into Eichen House in order to protect the others from him. Unfortunately, things do not improve for Stiles, who probably needed his friends to help him against this possession rather than trying to fight it on his own.

In the end, the Nogitsune racks up an impressive body count via proxies. Some of the deaths could have been prevented if Stiles just turned to others when he needed them.

7 Possessive

Stiles is protective of the people around him, but the protectiveness can also turn into a possessive attitude, especially when he’s suspicious of a person. In season 1, this is apparent in his suspicion of Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) and Allison’s (Crystal Reed) respective interests in Scott. Even when Lydia (Holland Roden), his crush, is interested in other boys, he acts like he has some sort of claim to her.

Either way, the possessive attitude can definitely hurt Stiles as a character.

6 Paranoia

In addition to his possessive and protective tendencies, Stiles Stilinski is paranoid about others outside of his social circle (and sometimes even those within his friend group). While the trait is definitely not unfounded over the course of Teen Wolf, it does oftentimes feel unreasonable, especially in the early days of the series. At one point, Stiles even angrily berates Scott for wanting to trust people and give them a second chance.

Stiles’ paranoia can lead him to hold some serious and long-lasting grudges as a result, even when he needs to let them go.

5 Attacking Scott

Scott and Stiles are best friends who always have each other’s backs. While Scott would never attack Stiles, the reverse isn’t true. When Lydia ends up in the hospital after Scott trusted the wrong person, Stiles physically attacks Scott in a fit of anger that crosses a line. While Stiles loves Lydia, she’s not his girlfriend, and thus the rage feels a bit out of proportion to the situation at hand.

In addition, again, no matter how angry Scott is at Stiles, he would never attack his best friend for any reason.

4 Early Interactions With Lydia

Stiles has a crush on Lydia that predates the series’ start. Over the next six seasons of Teen Wolf, the two of them do grow closer together and fall in love. Unfortunately, a lot of Stiles’s early interactions with Lydia come across as clingy and possessive, even though she is dating Jackson (Colton Haynes) at the start of the show.

As other non-Teen Wolf characters come under scrutiny for such actions with women, Stiles’ early behavior around Lydia is already aging poorly.

3 Lied To His Father About The Supernatural

For a large chunk of the series, Stiles lies to the Sheriff (Linden Ashby), his father, about the supernatural population within the town. At first, the decision not to tell his dad the truth can be rationalized away as Stiles not wanting to get into trouble, his worry for Scott, etc. As the seasons progress without the Sheriff learning the truth, it honestly just wears a little thin, especially because he could be a huge help to the Pack.

When the Sheriff does find out and is upset, it’s a valid response because Stiles did wait way too long to tell him things he needed to know.

2 Cringe Humor

In the world of Teen Wolf, Stiles’s original purpose was to be the comic relief best friend to lead character Scott. O’Brien, to his credit, does great with that sort of role, delivering deadpan snark and showcasing some great comedic timing. Unfortunately, as a result, there are some moments early on in the series where Stiles makes a joke or babbles when there should just be a moment for both the audience and the characters to breathe.

This peters off as the show progresses, but it can be pretty cringe-inducing in earlier seasons.

1 Judgemental

One of Stiles’ traits that has really not aged well is how weirdly judgemental he can be. Whether it is the jocks or a new person in his life, Stiles can be almost excessively critical of people he doesn’t like or trust immediately. If the person has already betrayed his trust then it’s taken to a whole new level to the point where audiences just want Stiles to forgive the person in question already.

While, for some characters, this is definitely earned, it’s not always the case for others. It just feels uncomfortable on a rewatch of Teen Wolf.
