Warning! Spoilers for Eternals #7 by Marvel Comics below

With the Eternals in complete disarray, Thanos just made an incredible play for power, becoming the Prime Eternal in the Marvel Universe. In Eternals #7 by Marvel Comics, the Mad Titan just threw his name in the ring to become the ruler of the Eternals, which was shockingly successful. Now, as the Eternals ponder their true purpose, they’ll have to deal with Thanos getting his ultimate revenge and having unparalleled control.

In the comics, Thanos was born an Eternal to Mentor and Sui-San as part of a test to whether the cosmic race could create life. The test turned out to be a massive failure, as Mentor and Sui-San’s creation of Thanos turned out to be a life sentence for both of them, as they unintentionally brought life to the supervillain. However, part of the reason Thanos turned against the Eternals was the fact they shunned his entire existence, as he was born with the Deviant gene – which gave him his monstrous appearance. With Phastos bringing Thanos back to life in an attempt to destroy the Great Machine, the Mad Titan has made it his personal quest to destroy the Eternals.

In Eternals #7 by Kerion Gillen, Esad Ribic, Matthew Wilson, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, Thanos chats with Druig as the Eternals leave the Great Machine to meet with the Deviants. Druig informs Thanos that the Eternals will soon form a Uni-Mind to select a Prime Eternal. He reveals that most Eternals believe the ceremony “is a matter of protocol” as Zuras isn’t expecting to be challenged as the leader of Eternals. Druig suggests to Thanos that Zuras’ rule isn’t guaranteed with the current conflict about the Eternals. He convinces Thanos to run – and with Ikaris, Sersi, and others in Lemuria – the Mad Titan captures enough votes to become the Prime Eternal.

As part of his new role, Thanos murders his uncle Zuras as he promises that a “new age” has begun among the Eternals. As Druig asks him, “what now?, the newly elected Prime Eternal murders him for secretly keeping files on him that could lead to his own death. The Mad Titan smartly takes down the one Eternal who could stop him.

Thanos becoming the Prime Eternal is very likely bad news for the Eternals. Thanos has sought to kill the Eternals for how he was treated in the past. And now, as their leader, there’s no telling what kind of power and moves he can make next to wipe out those who stand in his way. The Mad Titan just got his ultimate revenge. Up next? Thanos will meet with Uranos, the Undying, an Eternal who once ruled and is even eviler than him.
