New Manga Combines Narutos Kimimaro with Detective Pikachu

New manga Metro Labyrinth asks what would happen if, instead of teaming-up with a once-aspiring-Pokémon-trainer turned insurance adjuster, a cute yet snarky animal like Detective Pikachu’s titular Pokémon was paired with a character similar to Naruto’s Kimimaro.

In the live-action film Detective Pikachu, the eponymous Pokémon gets his spunk from his human partner, whose personality was fused with him by a Mewtwo. So rather than being forced to exclusively communicate by saying different variations of his name like most Pokémon, this Pikachu can speak – at least to his new partner. This opens up the hilarious experience of an adorable character delivering zippy one-liners – something Metro Labyrinth takes to the next level.

In Metro Labyrinth, a cute, cuddly squirrel-like creature named Tamiko stumbles across a boy named Shuu Abe who basically slept through a major cataclysmic event and wakes up in a new, post-apocalyptic world more than a century later. Like Detective Pikachu’s lead Pokémon, Tamiko can speak, and he has quite a mouth on him. He’s essentially just like the film’s eponymous Pikachu if the latter swore incessantly, fell victim to momentary fits of unadulterated rage and, for some reason, arbitrarily incorporated the word “squeak” into his speech at random. Both Tamiko and Detective Pikachu, however, love to have their belly rubbed.

Like Pikachu, Tamiko serves as a guide to Shuu, but instead of solving a mystery, Tamiko is helping Shuu navigate this strange new world. Tamiko also doesn’t battle other creatures himself, much like the film’s Pikachu. However, he does apparently share a special connection with Shuu, because the two level-up simultaneously.

What makes Shuu like the Naruto villain Kimimaro is the latter’s ability to manipulate his bones into weapons. Undoubtedly Kimimaro’s most powerful (and memorable) attack is the so-called Dance of the Seedling Fern, whereby he can generate up to 10,000 bone blades. This technique usually involves him first venturing underground before shooting the blades upward beneath his opponents so they sprout out from the earth like killer daisies. Shuu’s variation of this technique is much more unsettling, as it requires manipulating a special fungus inside of him, which all humans now possess in this post-apocalyptic world. So far, Shuu’s power is less impressive, but he’s already managed to generate a sword out of his hand.

Although Tamiko and Detective Pikachu’s eponymous Pokémon have different personalities, they are both cuddly companions who help guide their human partners while dispensing wry comments. In a dangerous world, Shuu isn’t yet on the same offensive level as Naruto’s Kimimaro, but the potential is there as Metro Labyrinth continues in the future, further exploring a daunting world through the eyes of a weapon-sprouting warrior and the smack-talking critter with his best interests at heart.
