These Netflix originals have ranged from being some of the best films found anywhere to being the kind of stuff that fans don’t even think is worth keeping their subscriptions for. We’re here to look at the best of the best in terms of Netflix original movies, based on their Rotten Tomatoes scores. This is being kept to scripted films, so no documentaries will be included.

10 Private Life (2018): 94%

In 2018, Netflix delivered one of its best comedy-dramas to date. Starring the versatile and talented Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti as the main couple, Private Life deals with some serious topics. The middle-aged married writers struggle to try to have a child by any means.

Directed by Academy Award-nominee Tamara Jenkins, Private Life was met with critical acclaim. It was praised for the realistic and emotional take on this couple’s journey, as well as for dealing with a subject that many viewers could identify with. The film was also nominated for several independent awards.

9 See You Yesterday (2019): 95%

Time travel movies are all the rage. Netflix delivered a hidden gem with ARQ a few years back and tried their hand at the genre again with 2019’s See You Yesterday. It follows a brilliant young girl who builds a time machine to save her brother from an untimely death at the hands of police officers.

Critics felt that the film managed to do a fantastic job of delivering an entertaining sci-fi adventure. But it was even more loved for the social commentary that it nails, mixing a timely theme with the story. The strong acting and direction only add to an intriguing premise.

8 Tramps (2016): 95%

There are a lot of movies out there where you feel the runtime. They seemingly go on forever with no end in sight. That’s not a good thing. If you can tell your story in a short timeframe that might be the best way to go. 2016’s Tramps is a case of doing a lot in a short amount of time.

Tramps is just 83 minutes long and many critics loved how breezy it is. Set in Queens, New York, it tells the tale of a struggling chef who meets a girl while working for a small-time hustler. Tramps is a strong blend of crime, romance, drama, and comedy. Many find it to be sweet and earnest.

7 Atlantics (2019): 96%

Though Atlantics hasn’t officially been released to Netflix (it premieres the day after Thanksgiving), it has already received sparkling reviews. That’s partially due to a strong performance at the Cannes Film Festival and a run in theaters in Senegal over the past few months.

Atlantics has been praised as a supernatural drama that takes plenty of unexpected twists and turns to keep audiences engaged. It managed to win the Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The movie also made history, as Mati Diop became the first black female director with a film in competition at the festival.

6 The Irishman (2019): 96%

Our second straight entry that hasn’t been released on Netflix just yet. The Irishman has been making headlines since it was first announced because that’s just what Martin Scorsese films do. Only one Netflix original film in history has ever had the prestigious honor of being nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. That was 2018’s Roma, directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It also won for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography.

The black-and-white film is a semi-autobiographical take on Cuarón’s early life. Taking place in Mexico City, it follows the life of a family’s live-in maid. Everything about this film was praised, from the acting to the direction to the screenplay. It earned the love it got from the Academy.

4 To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018): 97%

Netflix has consistently delivered teen romantic comedies on relatively small budgets. A lot of them are fun but largely forgettable. The one that separated itself from the pack was 2018’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Based on a 2014 novel of the same name, it wowed fans and critics alike.

Led by the electric chemistry between Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, this film became one of the most popular on Netflix. It did well enough to have two sequels greenlit. Though it was considered to not be all that surprising in terms of plot, it was boosted by a charming cast and delightful characters.

3 Mudbound (2017): 97%

When a movie features a cast like this, it is almost guaranteed to be great. Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Mary J. Blige, Jonathan Banks, and Garrett Hedlund led the way in 2017’s Mudbound. But the acting was only one of a slew of great things about this picture.

Mudbound focuses on both a white and black veteran of World War II as they return home to Mississippi and deal with their PTSD in different ways. Despite being set in the past, it deals with timely themes that go way beyond the era. It was featured on many “best of” lists in 2017.

2 Dolemite Is My Name (2019): 97%

For a lot of the 1980s and 1990s, Eddie Murphy was one of the top comedians in the world. Standup hits like Raw and classic films like Coming to America helped solidify his place in history. But a handful of disappointing projects forced his star to fall dramatically.

2019 marked the unexpected return to form for Murphy as the lead star of Dolemite Is My Name. He is joined by Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Epps, and several other talented actors. The brash film has been praised by nearly everyone, with Murphy’s comeback being a big reason why.

1 Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus (2019): 100%

Probably not the movie you expected to top this list, is it? 2019 saw Netflix revive some Nickelodeon classics in the form of feature films. Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus was their best effort as it holds a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The only other Netflix films to achieve that are documentaries.

This animated tale was praised for kicking things up a notch to make it feel like it belonged in 2019. It raised the stakes from the series while paying homage to it and sticking to what made that show so special. Though it’s the shortest entry on the list, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus packs a ton of laughs and action into the runtime.
