There are lots of unique enemies and creatures to encounter in the action RPG series by the name of Fallout but none are more interesting or powerful than Super Mutants. These mutant humanoids are humans who transformed due to exposure to the FEV virus.

Throughout each Fallout game, you can encounter many Super Mutants. Although most of them are hostile towards humans, there are a select few that are friendly or at least civil. Here are the most interesting Super Mutants that you should make sure to visit during your next trip to the Wasteland.

10 Uncle Leo

Uncle Leo is a Super Mutant in the Capital Wasteland. You can occasionally find this friendly fellow wandering the wastes, trying to gift his goods to customers that are likely put off by his mutant appearance.

Uncle Leo believes in peacefulness and considers himself a pacifist, which is rare among Super Mutants. Unfortunately, other mutants don’t like Leo since he doesn’t share the same blood-thirst as them, which is why he’s wandering the wastes alone, speaking to any traveler he encounters.

9 Grahm

Grahm is a friendly Super Mutant in Fallout 76 that travels the Wasteland and sells goods to anyone he comes across. The primary reason that Grahm is such a great character is because of how useful he is, as traders are quite important in Fallout 76.

With all of the Super Mutants that’ll attack you in Fallout 76, you can count on Grahm to provide you with a useful service. If you ever see Grahm traveling the wastes, make sure to stop in at his shop and see what he has to offer.

8 Swan

Swan is a Super Mutant Behemoth living in Boston at the same time as the Sole Survivor. If you happen to encounter him at Swan’s Pond, then you’re in for a challenging fight as Swan is one of the toughest enemies in Fallout 4.

Swan carries a weapon that he can use to wack you and is much larger than the average Super Mutant, making him a force to fear in the Wasteland. If you manage to defeat Swan once and for all, then you’ll get the Furious Powers Fist, an unarmed weapon that deals more damage with each consecutive hit.

7 Strong

Strong is a Super Mutant companion in Fallout 4. Unlike many of the other friendly Super Mutants in the Commonwealth, Strong isn’t much smarter than his hostile Super Mutant brothers. Luckily, Strong makes up for his lack of intelligence with strength and loyalty.

The Sole Survivor first encounters Strong at Trinity Tower in Boston, where he’s a prisoner of the other Super Mutants. Once you defeat the enemy mutants of the tower, you can recruit Strong as a companion and bring him on all your wasteland adventures.

6 Lieutenant

The Lieutenant is the right-hand mutant of the Master, so he’s in charge of the Super Mutant army you encounter in the first Fallout game. Unlike other Super Mutants, the Lieutenant is much stronger and smarter, making him the perfect candidate to lead the other mutants into war.

Additionally, the Lieutenant has technological enhancements on his body, so he’s even stronger than other Super Mutants beyond his biology. It’s quite possible that the Lieutenant is the strongest Super Mutant you can encounter in the Fallout franchise, which makes him a noteworthy character without a doubt.

5 Davison

Davidson is a Nightkin that the Courier may encounter at the REPCONN Testing Site near New Vegas. The Nightkin are a unique variant of Super Mutant, and they often use Stealth Boys to turn invisible and defeat their enemies. Like other Super Mutants, Davidson was a former soldier in the Master’s army.

Davidson has developed a second personality by the name of Antler, who acts much more rationally than him. Unfortunately, Davidson isn’t at his strongest mentally during the events of Fallout: New Vegas, so encountering him will likely end in combat instead of peace.

4 Erikson

The Sole Survivor first encounters Erikson at the Horizon Flight 1207 in the Far Harbor DLC. Like a few other friendly Super Mutants in the Fallout franchise, Erikson is a merchant and can sell you many useful items.

Erikson doesn’t see the world as other mutants do. He prefers to hunt wildlife as opposed to killing humans just for the sake of it, which is why he’s friendly towards you if you should approach him. It’s possible that Erikson lost his murderous mindset due to the strange fog present on the Island in the Far Harbor DLC. However, perhaps there’s simply something deep inside him that differentiates him from other Super Mutants.

3 Fawkes

Fawkes was originally a resident of Vault 87 in Fallout 3, although he eventually underwent the transformation that would make him a Super Mutant. Although Fawkes is a Super Mutant in appearance, he acts more like a human than the other mutants in the Capital Wasteland.

Despite acting like a human, Fawkes can’t fully remember his past or who he was prior to his transformation. These facts are upsetting to Fawkes, but he still pulls through to help the Lone Wanderer save the Capital Wasteland during the events of Fallout 3.

2 Brian Virgil

Brian Virgil is not only one of the most notable Super Mutants in the Fallout franchise, but he’s also one of the smartest mutants ever to live. Virgil was a scientist working for the Institute, but he eventually left the organization, which is an important piece of the plot in Fallout 4’s main story.

There are multiple interactions you can have with Virgil throughout Fallout 4, and you’ll come to find out that he’s not too fond of being a Super Mutant, even going so far as to ask you to retrieve his cure from the Institute. Virgil lives deep within the Glowing Sea, which is the irradiated piece of land in the Commonwealth.

1 Lily Bowen

Lily Bowen is a Super Mutant residing at Jacobstown in the Mojave Wasteland. You encounter her in Fallout: New Vegas and she can eventually become your companion, making her the only Super Mutant follower in the game.

Lily is one of the only confirmed female Super Mutants, as most of the other mutants in the Fallout franchise are described as male or by no gender. What makes Lily such an interesting character is the fact that she was a grandmother before transforming and regularly talks about her grandchildren while speaking to the Courier, which is rare since most Super Mutants can’t remember their human past.
