While R-rated movies have historically brought in fewer viewers because of the edgier content they contain, these films have still managed to gain substantial box office scores. Because of this, we decided to take a look at the highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time.

In order to do stack up the films, we’ll be using stats on Box Office Mojo. It’s important to note that while some of these movies would rank differently based on their worldwide scores, we’ll be using their domestic box office performance data.

With the logistics out of the way, it’s time to pull out some popcorn, sit back, and relax; Here are the highest-grossing movies with an R rating, according to Box Office Mojo.

10 Beverly Hills Cop ($232 Million)

This 1984 action comedy starred Eddie Murphy as Alex Foley, a Detroit cop who steps up his game to solve a big-time mystery in Beverly Hills: that of his best friend’s murder.

The film was praised for being snarky, fast, funny, and serious. It also launched Murphy to stardom.

Beverly Hills Cop ultimately took home $232 million at the domestic box office, which was especially impressive in the ’80s.

9 The Hangover Part II ($254 Million)

The Hangover sequel had a group of friends heading to Thailand for one of a wedding. While the guys plan a quiet pre-wedding brunch instead of a bachelor party to keep anything crazy from ensuing, they eventually wake up with face tattoos, shaven heads, and a detached finger. This has the guys trying to uncover what went on during the night they can’t remember.

The film’s plot felt like a repeat of the original film, only it was darker and raunchier, leading to poor reviews. Despite this, it still nabbed $254 million from the box office.

8 The Hangover ($277 Million)

The first Hangover movie had the men heading to Los Vegas to celebrate a different friend’s wedding. Though this could be good fun, they wake up after one insane night to find that the groom is missing. Like in the sequel, they can’t remember a thing. This leads the crew on one giant search for the man that is to be married.

The 2009 comedy took in $277 million from the box office and unlike the sequel, people found it to be super fresh.

7 The Matrix Reloaded ($281 Million)

The 2003 sequel to The Matrix had the freedom fighter continuing to rebel against the Machine Army months after the events of the original film. As the group fights to save humans from going extinct, however, they uncover dark secrets about The Matrix and the fate unfolding before them.

The film received generally positive reviews for its writing and character development. The box office also did well, pulling in $281 million.

6 Deadpool 2 ($324 Million)

This 2018 superhero sequel has the mischevious Deadpool creating the X-Force team in order to keep an orphaned mutant named Russell safe from the time-traveling soldier Cable. With a little help and a lot of weapons, things might just turn out okay.

The sequel was gory, charming, and all the dark, entertaining things synonymous with the series. This had it raking in a $324 million box office score.

5 It ($327 Million)

The 2017 adaption of Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel of the same name tells of a group of children in Derry, Maine who are haunted by a kid-eating clown who emerges from the sewer after 27 years. To keep anyone else from dying, the friends must team together to face their fears and the terrifying Pennywise.

The acting and emotion had many critics raving. They also praised the overall scariness and cinematography. The $327 million practically rolled in.

4 Joker ($328 Million)

The most recent R-rated film to hit this list is none other than Joker.

This psychological thriller uncovers the origins behind Batman’s most iconic nemesis. Though Arthur Fleck starts as an aspiring stand-up comedian and party clown, his sad life eventually causes him to spiral into a menacing blood-thirsty villain.

The film garnered loads of attention and Joaquin Phoenix, in the titular role, received praise for his genuine portrayal. The $328 million box office score seemed to come naturally.

3 American Sniper ($350 Million)

Bradley Cooper took on the role of real-life U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in this war drama. While Kyle is successful overseas, quickly becoming one of the best snipers in history, he finds that dealing with the haunting memories of war at home are not easy.

Kyle ends up serving four tours of duty in Iraq, but he can’t run away from the realities of real-life forever.

American Sniper took home $350 million at the box office. The weight and emotion was praised by many.

2 Deadpool ($363 Million)

Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative who now works as a mercenary, gets diagnosed with cancer. Because of this, he leaves his girlfriend Vanessa so that she won’t have to see him die.

However, when a scientist offers Wilson a crazy cure for his illness, he decides to take a chance. While Wilson ends up with scars all over his body, he also receives high-level healing powers. After transforming into Deadpool, he decides to hunt out the guy who almost destroyed him.

The dark and aware-of-itself humor is thick in this one and caused fans to flock to it. This had the tale ultimately bringing in $363 million at the domestic box office.

1 The Passion Of The Christ ($370 Million)

Topping off the list as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time is The Passion of the Christ.

This 2004 biblical drama dramatizes the story of Jesus as told in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as well as other religious materials. It focuses on his last 12 hours, ending briefly with his resurrection.

Though many found the film to be far too gory and uncomfortable, the film’s grand scale had viewers flocking to theaters. It ultimately pulled in $370 million at the domestic box office.
