The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

There are a lot of characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Whereas previous entries used Trophies as a means of honoring Nintendo’s history, they’ve finally been replaced with a new concept: Spirits. Spirits are equippable characters- typically made up of concept art- that can buff characters for World of Light, Spirit Board, and certain online modes. With your base 74 characters, you have over 1,000 Spirits to choose from. Naturally, and as you’ve probably guessed, we won’t be tackling every single Spirit today. Not only is it unrealistic, we know you don’t have the patience to wade through 1,000 entries of Spirit tiers just to find out that Waluigi was not in fact the best spirit all along.

Rather, we’ll be focusing on 30: the 15 best Spirits and the 15 worst Spirits. Of course, with so many Spirits to choose from, don’t be surprised to see some “obvious” choices excluded. When it comes down to it, it’s not feasible to assume that every single Spirit can be ranked in a succinct and efficient manner. That doesn’t mean we aren’t going to try our hardest, though. Your favorite Spirit may very well be the strongest in the game. Or perhaps one of the absolute worst. Either way, you’re about to learn more about Spirits than you ever wanted.

30 BEST: Zero

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

It goes without saying, but most of the best Spirits in the game are going to be four star, Legendary types. This is just the natural course of any balanced video game. The strongest will be, quite literally, whatever the strongest category is. That doesn’t mean others aren’t better or worse, though.

Just a heads up, this only applies to Mega Man X Zero.

Zero is one of the best Legendaries in the game if only due to his obscenely helpful buffs. Not only does Zero increase your base damage astronomically, his Spirit gives the equipping character additional speed with a boost attack that launches into anyone you run into. These alone make Zero profoundly useful in any scenario.

29 WEAK: Duster

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

On the flip side of Legendaries with great buffs, we have one star units with awkward buffs. Duster, for as lovable as he is, only buffs kick attacks. I don’t know about you, but kicks attack aren’t particularly useful since not enough characters actively use kicks. For the most part, barehanded characters tend to punch.

The only real benefit of Duster would be equipping him on Ryu or Ken who actively has a fairly useful kick attack. Even then, though, their other aspects are so much stronger that equipping Duster would almost be a waste of a slot. Especially since the buff he gives isn’t nearly as useful as it could be.

28 BEST: Celebi

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Although Celebi takes up three full slots on any given Spirit, those slots will be happily spent. Celebi’s special ability is called “Great Auto Heal” and it works wonders for any kinds of battles. You’ve probably noticed other Spirits with “Auto Heal,” but they’re never as good or useful as they initially sound.

You’ll never get rung out again.

Celebi is the complete antithesis of that idea, replenishing a fighter’s health with an alarming frequency. With Celebi equipped, you can basically cheese most stamina battles by rushing in, attacking, and playing keepaway until your health fully regenerates. This strategy works for regular fights, too. Cheap, but valid.

27 WEAK: Von Kaiser

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

One of the downsides of there being over 1,000 Spirits is the inevitable nature of most ending up redundant by World of Light’s endgame. No matter what you do, some Spirits simply are not going to be useful once you get better ranked characters. As a result, Spirits like Von Kaiser end up worthless.

The only real reason to use Von Kaiser is if you want a fist buff, but this is inherently flawed since countless other Spirits offer said buff while simply being better Spirits. Von Kaiser offers a player nothing. He is only useful on the off chance you get him as soon as you boot up Spirit Board, and worthless otherwise.

26 BEST: Karate Joe

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Doubly so since Karate Joe is a far better Spirit who does exactly what Von Kaiser does with zero drawback. He’s basically Von Kaiser is Von Kaiser had adequate stats. Although only Ace rank, Karate Joe is good enough to be a viable late game Spirit. Paired with Ryu, Ken, or Little Mac, he can make their punches hit even harder with a deeper heat. Karate Joe is the reason why characters like Von Kaiser are realistically just not good enough. It makes sense for progression purposes, but not for balancing.

25 WEAK: Metal Sonic

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Metal Sonic is proof that Spirits can be bad regardless of rank. Despite stats that seem decent at first glance, Metal Sonic simply cannot compete with other Spirits in his category to really get a leg up above anyone else. There’s also the fact that Metal Sonic doesn’t give a user a metal body as one would hope or expect. Rather, Metal Sonic speeds fighters up. Granted, this can be useful for fairly slow characters, but it doesn’t exactly make much sense with who Metal Sonic is as a character. A metal body would have done a far better job at making him useful.

24 BEST: Dark Emperor

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

The Dark Emperor is an absolute beast of a Spirit. While he is by no means the strongest in terms of raw stats, he’s a very well rounded Legendary Spirit who can equip three sub-Spirits. That in itself is more than enough to elevate him to fairly high heights. After all, such a combination makes the Dark Emperor fairly balanced.

That said, balance isn’t always a good thing, especially in regards to tiering. Characters need certain advantages. Thankfully, the Dark Emperor has a surprisingly high offensive stat for a blue Spirit, making him a powerhouse who can take hits without too much worry. In a way, it’s almost unfair how good he is.

23 WEAK: The Imprisoned

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

The Imprisoned isn’t well liked even in their own series. Considered one of the worst bosses in the entire Zelda franchise, and the absolute worst in Skyward Sword, the Imprisoned is a slow monster who breaks any semblance of pacing in half anytime he’s on screen. Naturally, this extends to his Spirit.

Plus, he looks like an avocado with toes.

The Imprisoned isn’t just a bad unit thanks to its stats, the Imprisoned is a bad unit because it slows you down. In a game where speed reigns above all else, why cripple yourself with a Spirit that just makes you slower? There is no realistic benefit to equipping the Imprisoned. Waste your slot on a better Spirit.

22 BEST: Hades

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Hades is the Dark Emperor if the Dark Emperor was actually balanced appropriately. While overwhelmingly strong in his final form, equipping Hades means you’ll be starting each match with 30% damage immediately inflected towards you. Fortunately, Hades is strong enough where this is barely an issue. He’s made even better if you equip a Spirit with autoheal. With the right set up, all of Hades’ flaws are tossed out the window. Maybe that shouldn’t be possible, but creating an overpowered Spirit is part of the fun.

21 WEAK: Venusaur

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Grass Types are weak to Fire. This is a tried and true philosophy that Game Freak originated and that life has subsequently emulated. While this approach works well for Pokémon and forest fires, there’s a reason why other games don’t abide by this hard and fast rule: because other games are balanced differently.

It’s hard enough being anything below four stars as is.

Super Smash Bros. is not the type of series where characters have elemental weaknesses, but here we are. Venusaur, as was the case in his own set of games, is weak to fire based attacks. Whatever benefit you could get from him is immediately voided since he has an inherent weakness that other Spirits wouldn’t have.

20 BEST: Mecha-Fiora

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Mecha-Fiora is simultaneously one of the best Spirits in the game and one of the worst. On one hand, she’s a neutral powerhouse with great stats and a full set of sub-Spirit slots. On the other hand, she’s a massive spoiler. To be fair, her game has been out for nearly ten years now, but it’s a good enough game where that does blow.

We aren’t here to discuss the ethics of spoilers, though. Rather, we’re here to discuss how awesome a Spirit Mecha-Fiora is. Which we already kind of did, didn’t we? That’s the thing about the best Spirits, they’re simply but sweet. They don’t have weird debuffs or weaknesses and they actually offer you a decent amount of experimentation when it comes to sub-Spirits.

19 WEAK: Bokoblin

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Unfortunately, the same “simply but sweet” principle that applies to the best Spirits also apply to the worst. Some are just too simple for their own good. Bokoblins offer you absolutely nothing of value. They exist on the off chance you need a Spirit incredibly early on and inexplicably only have a Bokoblin. Weak stats, no buffs, and useless slots, there’s nothing particularly noteworthy about the Bokoblin Spirit which is arguably worse than just being offensively bad when it comes down to it.

18 BEST: Mega Charizard X

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

What makes Mega Charizard X particularly useful is just how easily and early you can get him. Realistically, he’ll be one of the first Aces you get from just playing Spirit Board or World of Light. Better yet, despite only being three stars, his stats aren’t that much worse than your average Legendary. The best part, however, is the fact that- despite being a Pokemon- Mega Charizard X does not have a weakness like Venusaur. There’s no real drawback to using Mega Charizard X in place of other Spirits.

17 WEAK: Dan

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Even in his own series, Dan is a bit of a joke. Literally, Dan is basically the definition of the typical joke character. He’s essentially the original point of an entire archetype of characters who are designed to be as mediocre, or comically bad, as possible. Sometimes this actually works in their benefit. Other times? Eh.

Poor Dan just can’t get a break.

In the case of his Spirit, Dan is about what you’d expect. Not only does he have flimsy stats, he actually starts each battle by inflicting damage on the user. Unlike Hades who is inherently strong enough to make up for this drawback, that’s basically all there is to Dan. He’s a joke Spirit.

16 BEST: Sagat

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Although Sagat is a fantastic Spirit in his own right, what makes him so great is the journey to get him. What’s likely to be your first portal in World of Light, you’ll find yourself transported to a world map of our Earth that is completely reflective of Street Fighter II’s original stage select screen.

You need to work your way through the roster to get to Sagat. Not only is Sagat one of the stronger Spirits you get from this “dungeon” of sorts, the ride to get him is simply incredibly fun. The best Spirits are the ones that are actually fun to get.

15 WEAK: Glass Joe

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Glass Joe has the exact same problem Dan does: they’re joke characters. Where the premise is cute enough with Dan, Glass Joe perhaps pushes it a bit too far just by being derivative. In truth, whichever one is derivative will ultimately be the one you get second. Ostensibly, Glass Joe and Dan are the same Spirit, offering the same attributes with the same weaknesses. In that respect, why do you need two? One is going to be worse than the other and it’s all down to luck. Now that doesn’t sound like a very good Spirit, does it?

14 BEST: M. Bison

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

In your Street Fighter II battle royale, you’ll find yourself not stopping with Sagat, but with the four star Legendary M. Bison. Virtually the franchise’s antagonist, M. Bison is easily the strongest Street Fighter Spirit you’re going to get in the entire game. Pair him with Ryu or Ken and you’ll be doing an insane amount of damage. Even then, though, he’s a strong enough Spirit where he can be equipped by just about any character and carry them thanks to his absolutely astronomical stats.

13 WEAK: Moblin

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Look, nobody is ever going to use Moblin so let’s not beat around the bush. There is no realistic scenario where Moblin is your first or one of your first Spirits. Nobody likes the generic Moblin enough to equip one. Moblins have bad stats, look dumb, and offer you no benefits through skills. Why would you want a Moblin? You can’t even humor the question because it’s so outlandish. There is absolutely nothing worthwhile about the Moblin Spirit and this is a problem shared with so many other low tier Spirits.

12 BEST: Metal Mario

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

You aren’t going to get much offense off of Metal Mario. At Lv. 99, his attack stat is about as high as your average Lv. 1 Legendary. That’s really not much at all even taking account the rank differences. When it comes to defense, though? Metal Mario is a borderline disgusting tank with nearly maxed out defense.

The tankier, the better.

Best of all, his added weight ensures players are incredibly difficult to knock off. Not only can you literally take hits head on, you won’t be getting launched anytime soon. A properly built Metal Mario- albeit with just one slot- is a monster to behold. A being powerful enough to take any attack straight in the face.

11 WEAK: Staryu

The 15 Best Spirits In Super Smash Bros Ultimate (And 15 That Are Ridiculously Weak)

Mega Charizard X is the exception, not the rule. That means that the majority of Pokémon Spirits are not super powerful Aces with great skills and buffs. Rather, they’re measly one or two starred freaks who carry their weakness like a badge of honor. A Water Type, Staryu is naturally weak to Electricity. This means that Pikachu, Pichu, Ness, and Lucas will be doing a significant amount of damage on you should you equip Staryu. Even then, though, Staryu’s base stats are weak enough where you’d be taking way too much damage anyways. The electrical weakness is just a slap in the face.
