The entirety of Sonic the Hedgehog #32 wouldn’t have happened if Sonic hadn’t lost his mind and didn’t think his name was Mr. Needlenose. While he’s busy running laps around the entire island of the Sol Empire because there’s nothing better for him to do, trouble is brewing back at home, and the heroes of the Restoration who are left to protect their world are either too cowardly, lazy, MIA or unable to thwart this new threat.

Before the trouble starts, the Restoration wants to celebrate, and understandably so. The Metal Virus had quite literally just been hurled into the sun (thanks to the hedgehogs Sonic and Silver) and anyone who’d been transformed into a metallic zombie by the disease was restored. Dr. Eggman, however, was apparently itching to cause further mayhem because he hastily constructs a large and highly weaponized mech to literally crash their party.

Things get embarrassing when Dr. Eggman finally arrives on the scene (complete with fire and other theatrics as is usually his style). Whisper the Wolf first asks Amy the Hedgehog for orders, which, on its own, makes sense since Amy was still the leader of the Restoration as far as Whisper knew. But Whisper is clearly reacting out of fear. And she is a character who has her own personal team of Wisps at her disposal and who arms herself with the highly efficient Variable Wispon, a weapon that can fire laser beams and explosive energy rockets as well as being able to shape-shift into a massive hammer or spinning saw blades. But Amy is obviously too afraid to step up. Her excuse is that she recently passed on the title of leader to Jewel the Beetle, though Amy gave up the position not because she couldn’t lead, but because she didn’t want to do any paperwork (and Jewel did). So Whisper asks Jewel. But Jewel’s job description only covers desk duty, so she passes on the opportunity as well. Of course, Whisper doesn’t bother asking Tails the Fox.

The mercenary and thieving group Babylon Rogues could have helped, having just teamed up with the Restoration to fight against the Metal Virus, but it turns out this alliance had a very specific time limit, one that coincidentally didn’t run out when there was a party, but did the moment Dr. Eggman appeared. Their leader, Jet the Hawk, quickly comes to the decision that their team of treasure-seeking thieves will go back to their thieving ways and scoop up as many gems as possible during the ensuing chaos. Meanwhile, Big the Cat yells out for his friend Froggy, which, while understandable, is a fool’s errand since Froggy is known to look out for Froggy.

Meanwhile, Knuckles the Echidna is serving as protector of Angel Island by, well, protecting Angel Island and the time-traveling Silver the Hedgehog is back in the future. As for Shadow the Hedgehog, he’s oblivious of the chaos unfolding because he’s too busy sulking about something that happened earlier with Sonic.

All of this deflecting soon forces Vector the Crocodile, leader of the Chaotix Detective Agency, to take charge. And while the team under his leadership manages to hold off Dr. Eggman for the time being, they are unable to win. Plus, it appears as though the evil scientist has something else up his sleeve when he says, “You put up a decent fight. But now it’s time to raze you and this village to the ground.” And since Vector couldn’t beat Dr. Eggman before, it’s hard to imagine he would stand a better chance now. But before anyone can find out, Sonic appears just in time (with his memories intact) and saves the day, all within a few cells. Great job, guys. Good thing Sonic the Hedgehog is back.
