Batman has some of the most dynamic villains of any comic book movie, many of which have made it to the big screen. Matt Reeves’ The Batman promises to bring a number of baddies in to face off against Robert Pattinson’s Batman. But the two most notable villains involved are The Riddler and The Penguin.

The Riddler and The Penguin are some of Batman’s oldest foes, and have appeared in the movies already. However, these new versions of the character have fans eagerly awaiting their unveiling, and seeing what kind of threat they pose to the Caped Crusader. Here are five of the reasons The Riddler is the most exciting villain in The Batman, and five reasons why it is The Penguin.

10 The Riddler: Paul Dano

Casting the right actor to play an iconic villain is essential, and luckily this movie has assembled a brilliant cast. While the rumored original choice for the role was Jonah Hill, it was eventually Paul Dano who got the part. Most fans agree it is an excellent choice.

Dano has built a truly impressive career thus far, and many of his roles showcase what he could bring to a role like this. Dano has a talent for playing oddball and unsettling characters. It will be fun to see what he unleashes for his take on The Riddler.

9 The Penguin: Colin Farrell

While Dano seems like a perfect fit for his role as The Riddler, the casting choice for The Penguin was much more of a surprise. Colin Farrell will be playing Penguin in this movie and, though he is an unusual choice, it is another exciting bit of casting.

Farrell was once touted as Hollywood hottest new leading man, but he went with a more interesting career as a character actor. This unexpected role for him is just the kind of thing he could really knock out of the park.

8 The Riddler: Darker Take

Last time we saw Riddler on the big screen, he was played by Jim Carrey in Batman Forever. While Carrey was clearly having a lot of fun with the role, it was a bit over-the-top and goofy for some fans.

Dano’s take of Riddler seems to be a much darker version, which is very exciting. Rumors suggest that Riddler is a Gotham City serial killer who leaves cryptic clues for the police and Batman to solve. Given how he is normally portrayed, it would be thrilling to see such a gruesome version of Riddler.

7 The Penguin: An Intimidating Take

It has been even longer since Penguin appeared in a live-action Batman film, with Batman Returns being his previous performance. Danny DeVito gave a memorable performance in that film as the grotesque and monstrous Penguin, but The Batman promises to do something new with the character as well.

Penguin has always been a bit of a cartoonish character, but given the expected tone of this film, we might finally get to see a version of the Penguin that is genuinely intimidating.

6 The Riddler: Detective Story

Batman is often referred to as the World’s Greatest Detective, but that is an aspect of the character that has not really been touched upon in the films. Matt Reeves has promised that this movie will focus on Batman’s brilliant detective work instead of just his action hero role.

If this is true, then Riddler is the perfect villain for the movie. It could be so much fun to see Riddler committing horrible crimes around Gotham, and Batman having to use his mind to catch him. It evokes the feel of an old noir mystery, which would be a fresh take on the Batman story.

5 The Penguin: Gangster Story

Despite taking on men with freeze guns and giant crocodile-men, Batman can be a pretty grounded superhero. His adventures do sometimes feel like those old noir stories, especially when he is taking on organized crime.

We know that John Turturro has been cast in the film as crime boss Carmine Falcone, so there will be a gangster element to the story. Some rumors suggest Penguin will be a rival crime boss looking to take over Gotham. This is another interesting take to transplant Batman into a classic gangster story.

4 The Riddler: Targeting Bruce Wayne

Despite sometimes coming off a bit campy, Riddler is one of Batman’s most interesting villains since he tests the Caped Crusader in a mental way instead of a physical way. However, some rumors suggest that Riddler’s target in this film will not be Batman, but rather Bruce Wayne.

We’ve seen far too many characters in the movies find out Batman’s true identity, so hopefully it’s not more of that. However, it could be fun to see Bruce Wayne being the one psychological tortured without Riddler even knowing he is Batman.

3 The Penguin: Unpredictable

Even with as few details as we have about The Batman, we can make some educated guesses about Riddler’s role in the overall story. He has a very defined persona as a Batman villain. Penguin is another story, and the various versions of the character mean this new version could be anything.

There is a certain excitement to the unknown about Farrell’s take on the villain. We have no idea what to expect with the character or his place in the movie, so it’s hard not to be excited to see him revealed.

2 The Riddler: The Main Villain?

With so many characters already included in The Batman, it’s tough to predict who will have the bigger role. However, though Penguin was initially thought to be the Big Bad of the story, it’s now rumored that Riddler will be taking the spotlight.

Riddler isn’t usually a villain who gets to be at the center of the story, so this could be a lot of fun. The character has so much potential, and could be an all-time great cinematic villain if given enough material to really shine.

1 The Penguin: An Older Foe

We know from Robert Pattinson’s age that The Batman will explore the early days of Batman’s crime-fighting career. This puts Colin Farrell’s Penguin in an interesting position as he will be seen as an older villain compared to our hero.

Farrell can be such a compelling actor, so seeing him face off with a young Pattinson could make for an interesting dynamic. Batman could be seen as an inexperienced crime fighter while Penguin poses a threat as a seasoned criminal. It would put Batman in a vulnerable position we don’t often see.
