The synopsis for The Batman has been revealed and it teases Robert Pattinson’s rage-filled Dark Knight. Originally a solo outing for Ben Affleck’s Batman, the upcoming film eventually evolved into a standalone entry into DC’s cinematic universe, much like Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker from 2019. It’s also been said that The Batman is set on the DCEU’s Earth-2. Nevertheless, it seems to bear no relation to the two other Batmen, Affleck and Michael Keaton, appearing in the upcoming DCEU film The Flash, although with the introduction of the multiverse, anything is possible.

Robert Pattinson will be the next leading man to don the cape and cowl in the upcoming Batman movie from director Matt Reeves. The film will feature many of the usual suspects one would expect to see in Gotham, including Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Commissioner Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), and Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) who will help the Caped Crusader square off against multiple iconic DC villains. Paul Dano portrays the primary antagonist, The Riddler, while Colin Farrell’s Penguin acts as a secondary villain.

Now, the official synopsis for The Batman has been unveiled by Warner Bros. The synopsis provides a few ancillary plot details but for the most part, plays things pretty close to the chest, which is to be expected. The synopsis puts the focus on Pattinson’s rage-filled Dark Knight, describing some of the internal battles he will be facing in the film, which makes it sound more like a dark character study rather than a superhero blockbuster. THE BATMAN is an edgy, action-packed thriller that depicts Batman in his early years, struggling to balance rage with righteousness as he investigates a disturbing mystery that has terrorized Gotham. Robert Pattinson delivers a raw, intense portrayal of Batman as a disillusioned, desperate vigilante awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.

Warner Bros. has already debuted two The Batman trailers at separate DC FanDome events, but they curiously had not released an official synopsis until now. It was previously known that Reeves’ Batman movie would introduce a younger version of the character, inspired by DC’s Year One comics storyline. The synopsis backs that up by describing a younger Bruce Wayne who is likely still coping with the death of his parents and is clearly still coming into his own as a crimefighter.

This synopsis presents Pattinson’s Batman in stark contrast to the hardened and jaded version portrayed by Affleck in Zack Snyder’s DCEU movies and actually sounds more in line with Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, which also depicted the character’s early days as a budding vigilante. Still, Reeves’ Batman seems to have achieved a sense of grittiness unrivaled by past versions. Audiences will know for sure when The Batman hits theaters on March 4, 2022.
