The Best Defense Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

The Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl remakes include every best Defense Pokémon from the Sinnoh region that appeared in the original games. The Defense stat refers to how Pokémon resist the damage from opponents’ physical attacks. These types of Pokémon rely heavily on their defensive abilities to win battles, as well as a complementary stat like high Attack, HP, or Special Attack.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shinning Pearl remain as faithful as possible to their original sources, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Some changes have been made to reflect necessary updates since the original games’ release, such as the addition of Fairy-type Pokémon. Since BDSP are not yet compatible with Pokémon Home, a service that allows players to transfer their captured Pokémon between different games, trainers will have to rely upon everything they catch at first. It’s important to train a couple of great defense Pokémon as soon as possible, as well as training strong ones for endgame content.

Not every type of Pokémon is a strong defender, but there are a variety of options for players to choose from and build their team around. Like the originals, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl feature eight different Gym Leaders who use different types of Pokémon, as well as the Elite Four and the Elite Four Champion. Each Gym Leader is significantly stronger than the one who precedes them, and the Elite Four will prove to be an even greater challenge. One Defense Pokémon can’t take hit after hit from every trainer by themselves, so it’s important to have an established, defensively strong team with mixed-types long before the brutal postgame elite battles in Pokémon BDSP.

The Best Defense Pokémon In BDSP By Type

Below is a list of the best Defense Pokémon found in Brilliant Diamond and Shinning Pearl, along with their base Defense stat and their type. The base Defense stat refers to what a Pokémon’s Defense stat would be if it were at level 100, with no battles and a neutral Nature. The Nature of a Pokémon affects its base stats in either a positive, negative, or neutral way. For the best Defense Pokémon, trainers also want to find any of these Pokémon with either a Bold or Impish Nature. This will boost the given Pokémon’s Defense stat while lowering either its Attack or Special Attack, respectively. This is a positive trade-off considering most defense Pokémon typically have either lower Attack or Special Attack stats to begin with.

Additionally, trainers can give their Pokémon Protein to boost their Defense stat, as well as battle Pokémon like Geodude to raise what is known as Effort Value, or EV, points. Every four EV points raise a Pokémon Defense stat by one point overall.

As expected, none of the best Defense Pokémon can be obtained in the early game, so trainers will have to make their way through quite a bit of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl before they can get their hands on the best of the best. These include:
