The Pokémania boom of the late ’90s/early ’00s was a strange time and it led to some bizarre Pokémon events and merchandise, as Game Freak and Nintendo attempted to profit from their amazing cash cow.

The Pokémon franchise is no stranger to original music and there were a number of soundtrack CDs that contained songs performed by the cast of the anime, as well as songs associated with the movies. These include “Don’t Say You Love Me” by M2M from Pokémon: The First Movie and the “Pokémon 2.B.A. Master” soundtrack, which contained songs from the anime. There was also “Pokémon Christmas Bash”, which was a soundtrack full of Christmas songs performed by the cast from the anime.

There were also Pokémon songs that were produced specifically for different regions. There was one song developed within the United Kingdom that mixes every cheesy Nu Metal trope with Pokémon, in the form of “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” by 50.Grind. “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” was released in ’01, which is the only era it could have existed in. You can check it out in all of its glory below.

Where do you start with “Gotta Catch ‘Em All”? We don’t know what we love/hate about the track the most. Is it the numerous record scratches, the quotes from the anime mixed with the song, the CGI Poké Balls, or the skateboards/breakdancers? For us, the best part is the sincere breakdown of Jigglypuff’s song. Mike Shinoda must be so jealous.

The people who commissioned this Linkin Park/Pokémon wannabe crossover were clearly barking up the wrong tree, as those fans had already moved over to the Dragon Ball Z fanbase and were editing together AMVs of Gohan killing Perfect Cell to “Points of Authority.” 50.Grind wasn’t destined for greatness, as “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” only reached #57 on the UK charts. This isn’t surprising, considering the Poochie levels of pandering in the song and the fact that it was released at a time when Pokémania was waning. YouTube has kept the spirit of 50.Grind alive, with “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” surviving as a curio of a time when the Pokémon name could be slapped on anything in an attempt to make a profit.
