The Big Bang Theory 10 Things To Know About Galecki & Cuocos Friendship

For 12 seasons, Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki played The Big Bang Theory’s favorite couple, Penny and Leonard Hofstadter. Penny and Leonard had a long and impressive transformation over the years and went from neighbors to best friends to husband and wife. In real life, Galecki and Cuoco became fast friends with each other and the rest of the cast during their time on TBBT.

Now that the series is over, it appears that Galecki and Cuoco are still a special part of each other’s lives. Through marriages, divorces, babies, and new jobs — these two have done nothing but shown support for one another to each other, on social media, and to the press

They Dated For Two Years

Things didn’t always make sense for Penny and Leonard in their relationship, but it certainly made sense when Cuoco and Galecki teamed up. Fans of TBBT had no idea that Galecki and Cuoco didn’t just date on-screen, they dated off-screen too.

According to Good Housekeeping, the two dated for two years at the start of the series. In an interview with the Armchair Expert podcast, Cuoco said she had a “crush” on him shortly after meeting, but he had a girlfriend at the time. “The first few episodes we would talk and hang out and as things went on finally we got drinks one night. I had such a crush on him, and I didn’t think he felt that way about me.”

And Their Breakup Was Awkward On Set

One of the saddest things about Penny was when she broke up with Leonard (the first time around) because she wasn’t ready to tell him she loved him. In real life, Galecki and Cuoco loved each other, but couldn’t make it work. The days that followed their breakup were a little “sensitive,” according to Cuoco, but the former pair had no choice but to put on a brave face and be professionals as Penny and Leonard.

One way to do that was throwing themselves into work, which creator Chuck Lorre helped them with. On the Armchair Expert podcast, Cuoco said, “But I remember those weeks that Chuck [Lorre] had written these episodes where all of a sudden our characters were like sleeping together every other second. And Johnny and I would talk, I’m like, ‘No but I think he did that on purpose.’ I still believe he might’ve … just to f–k with us.” In the end, this tactic helped them heal.

They Found A Deep Friendship Despite Dating Others

When the two broke up, they eventually found themselves in different relationships. Cuoco would go on to marry and divorce Ryan Sweeting and recently, Karl Cook. And Galecki broke up with his longtime girlfriend and mother of his child, Alaina Meyer. Regardless of their paths in life, they always supported each other.

According to Nicki Swift, Cuoco said this about her new relationship with Galecki, “We knew we weren’t destined to be together. We accepted it and said, ‘Look, if we ever break up, we will be professional.'” She continued, “I’m so lucky it was a mutual ending and that we don’t hate each other. We’ve seen that happen on other shows.”

Johnny’s The Emotional One

Penny and Leonard’s relationship was perfect in the sense that they were opposites who were attracted to each other. Penny was dry and a little naive, while Leonard was brilliant and emotional. Funny enough, it wasn’t just Leonard who was emotional — Galecki is too.

According to Cheat Sheet, at the end of The Big Bang Theory, everyone thought Cuoco would be the emotional wreck on set, but as it turned out, it was Galecki. He said, “I was so worried about Kaley and her being overcome with emotion.” He continued saying, “I ended up being the quivering puddle of tears on the floor.”

A Showrunner Accidently Walked In On Them Fighting

It’s not known if Galecki and Cuoco fought often or not in their relationship since they’re both incredibly private when it comes to their time together. However, their characters on TBBT had plenty of arguments with each other and their friend group.

The most information fans have about a rough patch in Galecki and Cuoco’s relationship was a story told at Comic-Con, mentioned by MovieWeb. Showrunner Steve Molaro told a (now) humorous story of the time he saw Cuoco and Galecki at the hotel bar. He thought it would be fun to join them for a drink, but it didn’t turn into the night he was expecting. “I didn’t know a) They were secretly dating and b) They were right in the middle of a fight, so I walked up and I could see she’s about to cry and I’m like, ‘I’m gonna go.’ And [Kaley’s like], ‘No, it’s fine! No, stay!’” Molaro said. Nowadays, the three all laugh about it.

Johnny Doesn’t Like Talking About Their Friendship

One TBBT storyline that mimicked real life was when Penny and Leonard had to hide their relationship from others until they figured out if they were going to give it a shot or not. In real life, the two didn’t tell anyone about their relationship either because they didn’t want it to affect their jobs.

Today, Galecki is still hesitant to talk about Cuoco. “We’re dear friends, still. Kaley’s not just an ex, she’s a part of my life,” he told CBS Watch via EOnline. “I just don’t like to speak about it. And not because I’m trying to be enigmatic; I just worry that it will conflict with people’s acceptance of Leonard and Penny.”

Cuoco married equestrian Karl Cook in 2018. On social media, the two seemed perfect together but decided to part ways three years later. Before their split, Cook visited Cuoco on set where he was seen getting along famously with Galecki. This confirmed that there was no awkwardness between Cuoco, Galecki, and any potential partners in their lives.

On TBBT, Penny also could have ended up with other people besides Leonard but realized she compared every boyfriend to him.

A Prank Gone Wrong

There were numerous moments in Penny and Sheldon’s friendship that made them one of the best pairings. Despite their closeness, Penny and Leonard still pranked Sheldon on occasion. Ironically, Galecki and Cuoco also pranked their castmates.

Movie Web shared that the two planned on pranking the cast in an episode where Penny and Leonard were fighting. Galecki (as Leonard) pretended to punch Cuoco (as Penny)—surprising everyone—but on Cuoco’s way down to the ground, she hit her head on the chair and was bleeding profusely. She and Galecki didn’t realize it and continued fighting until everyone realized 1.) it was a prank and 2.) Cuoco was bleeding in real life and needed stitches!

They Are Family

Towards the end of TBBT, the stars did countless interviews about their time on the series and how much it meant to them to be on screen for over a decade. As an on-screen couple and as a former couple in real life, Galecki and Cuoco, especially, were going to miss each other.

Galecki told TV Insider just how special his time with Cuoco and the cast was. “This is like a family. We have been together for marriages, births, deaths, and divorce. A very small pool of people can relate to this experience firsthand, and that will always be the case, for the rest of our lives.”

Johnny Would Have Dressed As A Horse For Kaley’s Wedding

Penny and Leonard’s second wedding was filled with heartwarming quotes and friendship. And it seems like Cuoco’s wedding to Karl Cook was similar, but there was one thing that Penny and Leonard didn’t have: animals.

Cuoco and Cook are animal lovers and had some of their pets a part of their wedding. With Galecki in the audience, he told James Corden (reported by Today) that he heard the couple tried to have their miniature horse walk down the aisle, but it refused. Proving that there was no bad blood between the two, he joked, “I thought, well, I would have gotten in a miniature horse costume for that.”
