Throughout the Pokémon franchise, many characters fought one another. Ash, in particular, spends considerable time arguing with his many companions. He shares an unspoken attraction with some and a friendly, sibling-like rivalry with the others, which explains their complex and, at times, hostile interactions.

Beyond the young Trainer and his friends, other characters, be it evil team grunts, Pokémon professors, or friendly rivals, also engaged in fierce arguments. At the end of the day, as thrilling as it is to see Pokémon battling each other, some of the series’ most memorable confrontations happened outside the battlefield.

9 The Bitter Berry

Iris and Ash share a very contentious relationship. She constantly berates him, calling him an immature kid and, at times, even mocking his battling strategies. He retorts by also making fun of her, albeit in a less biting manner. They are indeed friends, but Ash’s interactions with her are more chaotic than with any of his previous companions.

In the 131st episode of the Black & White anime, Ash and Iris have a falling out over a bitter berry, and she abandons the group. Cilan, Pikachu, and Axew try to patch things up between them, but it takes Team Rocket’s intervention for the two to apologize. It’s a ridiculous argument that got blown way out of proportion by the two immature Trainers.

8 May And Max’s Sibling Rivalry

The sibling duo of May and Max travel the Hoenn region alongside Ash and Brock. Like any brother and sister, Max and May go through moments of supportive love and intense rivalry.

In the 81st episode of the Ruby & Sapphire season, “Take This House and Shuppet,” May and Max argue, and her harsh words hurt him enough to run away and declare he’ll never return. She calls him a know-it-all, and while she might be on to something, her lack of tact is notorious. Max ends up getting lost in a house haunted by a Shuppet, going on his own little adventure. He reconciles with May at the end of the episode, and their relationship remains volatile yet loving.

7 Ash And Dawn’s Witty Exchanges

Ash and Dawn’s relationship is one of true friendship. They constantly support each other throughout their many battles.

However, the two also share some meaningful arguments during their journey together. They memorably fight in Diamond & Pearl’s fourth episode, after Dawn unsuccessfully tries to catch a Buneary. They exchange some pretty witty and amusing insults but patch things up in the end. In the 29th episode, their fighting also makes them lose a dual battle, and they both learn a valuable lesson.

6 Barry’s Bursting Out All Over

Barry serves as the main rival in the Generation IV games, Diamond & Pearl, and will, of course, return in the upcoming remakes, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. He is an impatient and eager young boy who’s always in a hurry, often crashing against people on his way to the regions’ Gyms.

In the anime, Barry retains this same personality and becomes even more impatient. He constantly attempts to “fine” people when they displease him in any way. Barry picks petty arguments not only with Ash and friends but also with many strangers along the way. He also once tries to fine Team Rocket for capturing his Empoleon. His hyperactive behavior often annoys people, and even Empoleon seems uncomfortable at times.

5 Ash And Misty’s Numerous Arguments

As Ash’s first female companion, Misty spends the longest with him. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start when he “borrows” her bicycle and destroys it in the process. She then tags along on his journey until he repays her, beginning a series of love-hate interactions that last for two seasons.

Misty’s explosive behavior often leads to her lashing out at Ash, who usually replies in an equally immature way. The two argue about almost everything, and Misty gets very annoyed when they get lost in forests due to her aversion to Bug-types. They still care for each other, and the show often teases a possible romantic partnership in their future.

4 Pikachu’s Jealousy

The relationship between Pikachu and Ash is the beating heart of the Pokémon franchise. The yellow mouse and its Trainer go through numerous adventures over the years, and their bond only strengthens with each new one. Still, the two aren’t immune to arguments, even if they can’t fight with each other per se.

In one of the more recent Journeys episodes, Pikachu becomes jealous of all the time Ash spends with his newly hatched Riolu. When Delia Ketchum arrives and gives the electric mouse some much-needed attention, it follows her when she leaves but gets lost in the woods along with her Mr. Mime. The two bond and eventually make it back to Ash, and Pikachu reconciles with its Trainer. Seeing Pikachu angry at Ash is odd enough, but the fact it actually tried to abandon Ash is concerning.

3 Ash And Serena Have A Snow Fight

Throughout his Kalos journey, Ash shares some pivotal moments with Serena. Their time together is the closest he gets to showing romantic feelings for a companion, and she even kisses him at the end of the season, leaving him bewildered but flattered.

Serena and Ash hardly ever fought, in part because of her crush on him. However, they did argue once, after Ash’s defeat against Wulfric. The young Trainer becomes frustrated at his failure to master Greninja’s Battle Bond ability and runs away into a snowy field. She follows and tries to console him, but he snaps and tells her to leave. Hurt but resilient, Serena throws a snowball at him, bringing him back to his senses. It’s an emotional scene and one of the most crucial in their relationship development.

2 Who Gets To Keep Togepi?

In one of the most iconic storylines of the Kanto season, Ash, Misty, Brock, and Meowth argue over who’ll get to keep a mysterious Pokémon egg. They compete in several tests to determine who’s more apt to keep it, with Meowth showing surprising determination to win.

When the egg finally hatches, a Togepi comes out, charming everyone. The baby Pokémon first locks eyes with Misty, recognizing her as its “mother” and choosing to stay with her. Everyone respects its decision, but Meowth leaves noticeably heartbroken.

1 Team Rocket Disbands

Team Rocket is a mainstay of the franchise. The trio goes through numerous highs and lows, always sticking together through thick and thin. They even try to go straight at times, with Jessie entering and even winning some Pokémon Contests.

Still, the trio goes through some rough patches, most notably during the Ruby & Sapphire episode “The Ol’ Berate and Switch!” After yet another failed attempt at catching Pikachu, the trio gets into a heated argument and decides to go their separate ways. Jessie joins Butch, while James joins Cassidy, and Meowth remains a solo agent. Their separation doesn’t last very long, and by the time Ash deals with them, the three blast off as friends.
