The Biggest Stories Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

The third week of September has ended, and it was a huge one for the video game world. The next-generation console war is heating up, with Sony stumbling on its messaging and Microsoft presenting the more professional front. Whether the Xbox brand can maintain this positive image will be revealed next week, when the Series S/X pre-orders go live.

The biggest stories of the week involve Sony running an incredible show (before ruining it afterward), Nintendo bringing the hunt back to the Switch, Fall Guys beating away the cheaters with a hammer, Warner Bros. trying to scrub JK Rowling from Hogwarts Legacy, and the PS5 pre-order disaster.

The PS5 Showcase Hypes Up The Fans…

The Biggest Stories Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

The PS5 Showcase finally took place, so we can stop speculating about the launch info of the system. The PS5 Digital Edition will cost $399 and the Physical Edition will cost $499. The PS5 will launch on November 12 in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. The rest of the world will get the PS5 on November 19.

The PS5 Showcase opened up strong with the reveal of Final Fantasy XVI, followed by gameplay footage of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War, Resident Evil: Village, Deathloop, and Demon’s Souls. Hogwarts Legacy and Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition were announced for the system. It was revealed that PS5 owners will gain access to a small library of PS4 titles at launch, through the PlayStation Plus Collection. The show ended with a tease for God of War: Ragnarok. It was a great show that had us hyped for the PS5.

…And Then The Bad News

The Biggest Stories Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

Once the PS5 Showcase had ended, the official PlayStation Blog became the bearer of bad news that Sony was trying to sneak under the door. It was revealed that Horizon Forbidden West, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales were also coming to PS4. This meant that some of the biggest PS5 exclusives were coming to a system that most Sony fans already owned, which diminishes the value of the upcoming console in the eyes of many. If the PS4 can run these games, then what’s the point of upgrading at the end of 2020?

There was also a strange situation involving Demon’s Souls, which is one of the PS5 exclusives at launch. An official trailer for the game ended with a message saying that Demon’s Souls was coming to PC and other consoles in the future. Sony quickly removed the trailer and stated that Demon’s Souls is still a PS5 exclusive and that the message was the result of human error. This is a pretty huge mistake to make, and fans suspect it could be Sony covering up the truth, and that Demon’s Souls might only be a timed exclusive.

Nintendo Reveals That The Hunt Is Back On

The Biggest Stories Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

Nintendo might not have a dog in the next-gen race, but a new Partner Showcase helped keep things interesting for the Switch. Capcom announced two new Monster Hunter titles: Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. Hades was shadow-dropped onto the eShop and officially left Early Access on PC. Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny was announced during the show, and it capped off with a Switch port of Ori and the Will of the Wisps launching on the eShop.

JK Rowling’s Involvement In Hogwarts Legacy Is Downplayed

The Biggest Stories Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

Hogwarts Legacy was finally announced, even though the existence of the game had been known for a long time, due to numerous leaks and spoilers. The trailer for Hogwarts Legacy was excellent, but many people are stating their distaste for the game, thanks to JK Rowling’s transphobic comments on social media.

Warner Bros. attempted damage control with Hogwarts Legacy, with an online FAQ that downplayed Rowling’s involvement with the game. It’s debatable whether this will have an effect, as she will still profit from sales of Hogwarts Legacy, regardless of how much she contributed to its story.

Fall Guys Brings Big Yeetus In Mid-Season Update

The Biggest Stories Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

The second season of Fall Guys is still a few weeks away, but Mediatonic released a mid-season update that drastically shook up the rules of the existing games. Many of the effects that players are used to with the Fall Guys minigames were changed on the fly, which threw established strategies out of the window. The mythical “Big Yeetus” was also added to the game, which is a hammer that causes chaos whether it appears. Some much-needed anti-cheating software was also implemented in the PC version of Fall Guys.

Sony Drops The Ball On PS5 Pre-Orders

Pre-orders for the PS5 were a total shambles. It seemed as if retailers started randomly taking orders at different times, with little warning for the consumer. This quickly led to scalpers charging ridiculous prices for pre-orders on PS5s. Sony might have jumped the gun on pre-orders in an effort to beat Microsoft to the punch, and concerns about the release started to rise when Amazon emailed customers and told them their PS5 could be delayed. Sony has since apologized for the pre-order situation and has promised that more stock is on the way.
