One of the most compelling characters who was introduced into The Boys during its wild second season was Lamplighter. The former member of the Seven exited the team before the events of the show and Starlight was brought in to replace him. But once he re-emerges, he brings forth a lot of secrets.

However, as soon as Lamplighter appeared in the series, many fans were quick to realize that this was a much different version of the character than what appears in the comics. Though certain similarities do exist between the two, there are aspects to Lamplighter that only fans of the comics will know.

10 His Costume

Superhero costumes are always a tricky thing to pull off in a live-action format. They can often look really over-the-top and corny in the real world. Luckily for The Boys, the show can comment on that fact as they do when Frenchie and the others mock Lamplighter’s costume.

As goofy as it might look in the show, it is at least more memorable than his costume in the comics. Whereas in the show he has an ominous hood and robe, Lamplighter’s costume in the comics is a very standard yellow-and-blue spandex and an eye mask.

9 Was Part Of The 9/11 Disaster

The show likes to blend the events of the real world with this wild superhero world. Sometimes it makes for really interesting commentary and sometimes it can feel like a misfire. However, the comics lean into this idea even more, including a storyline centered around the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

In this reality, Vought used the tragedy to introduce the Seven to the world as they were sent to save the day. The whole thing ended up being a disaster and the incompetent superheroes made a mess of things. In the mayhem, Lamplighter was thrown into the wing of the plane, breaking his ribs, which he often complains about.

8 Going Rogue From The Seven

Like most of the superheroes in this world, Lamplighter was a very entitled person who didn’t like being told what to do. In a flashback within the comics, it is revealed that the Seven had a run-in with the Boys in the past where they used stolen information to blackmail them.

Lamplighter didn’t want to back down from these humans, but Homelander ordered the Seven not to retaliate. However, when they are returning to their base, Lamplighter uses his powers to blind his teammates and go seek revenge.

7 Purposely Killed Granddaughters

In the show, the Boys also try to blackmail Lamplighter — and he also doesn’t take it very well. This results in the grandchildren of Grace Mallory being burned alive. However, when they find Lamplighter later on, he confesses that he didn’t know the children were there and only meant to kill Mallory.

In the comics, Lamplighter does not even have that many moral reservations. After going rogue from the rest of the Seven, he murders the grandchildren on purpose, showing how evil a Supe he really is.

6 Used As A Sacrifice

The history that is shared between the Boys and the Seven in the comics is quite interesting as very much of it revolves around Lamplighter. Following the deaths of Mallory’s grandchildren, the war between these two groups is on the brink.

Though Homelander is evil, he does recognize the threat the Boys face so he recommends a truce. In order to appease the Boys, he hands Lamplighter over as a sacrifice. The Boys agree to the terms and Lamplighter is promptly executed.

5 He Was Reanimated

In both the show and the comics, all the Supes in the universe get their powers from Compound V. However, in the comics, Compound V comes with a few strange side effects. Not only does it grant people amazing abilities, but it also gives them life after death.

In many several cases, Supes have been killed only to be reanimated thanks to the Compound V in their system. However, this only keeps their bodies alive while their minds are largely lost, making them zombie-like.

4 Hidden Away

The truth about Lamplighter is revealed in the comics when Starlight and A-Train are given a messy task. They are assigned to clean up a restricted area of the base which turns out to be where they are keeping Lamplighter’s reanimated corpse.

He is shown to be a mindless and grotesque being covered in filth. It is a stomach-churning sight that proves even more that this world of superheroes is not as glamorous as some might expect.

3 Used As Example

The relationship between Butcher and Homelander in the comics is very different than how it is depicted in the show. In the show, Homelander is a more unstable character who acts impulsively and will really not hesitate to kill someone who is even the slightest inconvenience to him. Butcher has only managed to stay alive thanks to others stepping in and saving him.

In the comics, Homelander seems to have respect for Butcher in some strange way, seeing him as a threat that should not be underestimated. This is the reason Lamplighter is kept around in his reanimated form as Homelander uses him as a reminder of how dangerous Butcher can be.

2 His Powers

Despite being a member of the Seven, Lamplighter is not featured very heavily in the comics. Apart from his zombie appearance when Starlight finds him, he only appears in a couple of flashbacks.

As a result, there is not a lot of information about his powers, but there are some things that can be pieced together. It is clear that his powers derive from the lamp he carries around with him, which might be a nod to Green Lantern. He is able to fly and he is shown using his powers to blind the rest of the Seven. Most significantly, he can summon firepower similar to what is seen on the show.

1 Eventually Found

Not surprisingly, the comic series of The Boys eventually comes to a bloody climax as Homelander leads a superhero takeover of the government while the Boys expose all of Vought’s darkest secrets.

In the aftermath of all the bloody mayhem, there is news that Lamplighter was discovered. After the CIA raided the Vought facility, his reanimated corpse was found after the world had thought he was away on some secret mission. With all the other madness going on, this information is mentioned only in passing and that is the last that’s heard of Lamplighter.
