Warning! Spoilers for The Boys television series and comics below!

In both The Boys television series and comic, Annie January’s initiation to The Seven is met with a predatory, sexual assault at the hands of a fellow Supe. However, the assault is much different in the comics as multiple heroes, including Homelander and Black Noir are ultimately responsible for the disgusting action, not the Deep, like in the Amazon series.

In The Boys television series, Annie is shocked when during a tour of The Seven’s meeting room when the Deep pulls his pants down after hearing about her dream of joining the team and that she had a poster of him on her wall growing up. Annie is disgusted by the Deep, who tells her that he’ll tell Homelander if she doesn’t comply with his assault. It’s one of the most messed up scenes in the entire show. However, it’s somehow much worse in the comics.

The Boys #3 by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson opens with Starlight getting a tour of The Seven’s headquarters. Much like the show, Annie is thrilled to be the newest recruit and is in awe of her fellow heroes. Homelander gives Annie a tour and when he brings her into the meeting room, he tells her there’s one final test to prove she’s a member of the team. He pulls down his pants and tells her to “suck it.”

Annie is justifiably shocked by Homelander’s blackmail. Much like the Deep does in the TV show, Homelander threatens her if she doesn’t comply with his demands. To make matters worse, both Black Noir and A-Train show up and pull their pants down as well. The comic then flashes forward to Annie throwing up, obviously sick to her stomach by Homelander and the other’s assault.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise the show avoided directly adapting the scene. Annie’s assault is one of the most uncomfortable moments in the show’s two seasons, and by making the Deep the sole assaulter, it really paints a picture of how messed up his individual actions were. The comic scene was more about shock value than having something to say. The series made a conscious effort to make the Deep a bad guy, who’s actions would later come back to bite him – as he was demoted from the team. Funny enough, the Deep is probably the most decent person in The Seven in the comics – as he was the only (human) male on the team not involved in the assault. In The Boys comic universe, Homelander was ultimately too powerful to face any serious repercussions from Vought.
