Here’s where you recognize the cast of Netflix’s The Boys In The Band from. Adapted from the stage play of the same name, the adaptation comes to the streaming platform as part of Ryan Murphy’s $300m deal and stars the full cast of the popular 2018 stage revival.

Based on Mart Crowley’s 1968 play – which became a pioneering 1970 movie directed by William Friedkin that is held up as a touchstone of queer cinema – the film follows seven gay party guests (and one male prostitute) brought together for the birthday of their friend Harold (Zachary Quinto) and tension blossoms out of the revelation that one of them may be a closeted homosexual. Directed by frequent Murphy collaborator and 2018 revival director Joe Mantello, it’s a gripping tale based entirely around the dynamics of one group.

As well as Star Trek actor Quinto as the central birthday boy, the Netflix film also brings together a group of screen and stage talents known for the likes of The Big Bang Theory, Magic Mike and Desperate Housewives. Here’s every star of The Boys In The Band and what they’ve been in before.

Zachary Quinto as Harold

Zachary Quinto plays flamboyant birthday boy Harold whose confidence hides insecurities about his background and age. First known for Heroes, Quinto has more recently played Spock in the Kelvin Universe Star Trek movies and in horror series NOS4A2.

Jim Parsons as Michael

Jim Parsons stars as Michael, a hard-drinking but religious screenwriter whose apartment is the usual gathering place for his group of friends. Most known for his role in The Big Bang Theory, Parsons starred in Murphy’s Netflix series Hollywood and the stunning The Normal Heart.

Matt Bomer as Donald

Matt Bomer plays Donald, Michael’s ex and another birthday guest. He previously appeared in The Normal Heart and American Horror Story for Murphy and is recognizable for his role as stripper Ken in the Magic Mike movies.

Andrew Rannells as Larry

Larry is an artist who is in an unraveling long-term relationship with Hank, who he cheats on. He’s played by stage actor Andrew Rannells who has been in Girls but is more known for his work in stage productions of the likes of Hamilton, The Book of Mormon, and Hedwig and the Angry Itch.

Charlie Carver as Cowboy

Cowboy isn’t so much a guest of the party as a present. He’s a young male prostitute bought as a gift for Harold who ends up wrapped up in the drama. He’s played by Desperate Housewives and Ratched star Charlie Carver who next has a secret role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Robin de Jesús as Emory

Flamboyant and loud, Emory is a decorator who finds himself at the heart of tensions because of his Latinx background. He’s played by relative newcomer who comes to film on the back of three Tony nominations, including for The Boys in the Band. He’s set to star in Lin Manuel Miranda’s Tick, Tick…Boom!.

Brian Hutchison as Alan

Brian Hutchison plays Alan, the center of the story’s conflict. He’s married and unaware of his old college friend Michael’s sexuality, which appalls him. Hutchison is a veteran of stage with lots of TV roles, including The Sinner most recently.

Michael Benjamin Washington as Bernard

Librarian, Michael faces other challenges to his friends because of his race, navigating New York as a black gay man. He’s played by Broadway star Michael Benjamin Washington who played Trevor Briggs in Ratched.

Tuc Watkins as Hank

Larry’s partner Hank is a maths teacher who left his family to be with him, despite Larry’s desire for an open relationship. He’s played by Tuc Watkins, who previously played Bob Hunter on Desperate Housewives and Pistol Pete on Parks and Recreation.
