Recently eliminated The Challenge: Spies, Lies & Allies rookie Bettina Buchanan revealed that her sub-par performance this season was due to a surprise pregnancy. Bettina didn’t survive long after the Challenge mid-season twist, and went home after a disappointing elimination loss. However, Bettina’s latest Instagram post provides clarity to her performance this season, and her unusual circumstance indicates Bettina may be more cut out for The Challenge than fans had assumed.

Spies, Lies & Allies was Bettina’s first time competing on The Challenge, and the Paradise Hotel: Sweden alum didn’t make a great impression on viewers. Even though Bettina managed to win an elimination against reigning champion Amber Borzotra earlier in the season, many fans felt her performance during the daily challenges was disappointing. Between not winning any daily challenges or making any major power plays, Bettina coasted through the competition with her Challenge veteran partner Cory Wharton. Eventually, Bettina lost to fellow rookie Emy Alupei during an elimination challenge where it seemed like Bettina had given up.

However, if Bettina seemed unusually exhausted in that elimination, it’s because she was pregnant but didn’t know it. In a lengthy Instagram post, Bettina revealed that she found out she was 15 weeks pregnant when she got home from The Challenge. The Swedish reality star admitted that throughout the competition she “became weaker and slower, and gained weight, with each passing week” throughout filming. The revelation explains a lot, like why Bettina ended up getting eliminated from the competition despite surviving the season 37 veteran alliance. The fact that Bettina underwent such difficult challenges with a fetus inside her actually makes her performance pretty impressive.

In the Instagram post, Bettina also opened up about how motherhood isn’t in the cards for her at the moment, and that she decided to get an abortion. Bettina clarified that in her home country of Sweden it’s legal to get an abortion up until 18 weeks, and she acknowledged that she is lucky to even have access to an abortion. “I know that it is absolutely not legal everywhere,” she commented. “I also know that many do not dare to have an abortion due to patriarchy.” Bettina added that in Sweden, access to abortion is a human right, and she’s using her experience as inspiration to others.

The Spies, Lies & Allies rookie’s openness and honesty is refreshing and a brave move. Bettina said the decision to have an abortion was “obvious” to her, because she’s not ready to be a mom just yet, though she knows that not everyone gets to make that decision. She feels the need to be vocal about her experience as a way to help change the stigma around abortions. “All of us who actually dare, need to talk about this to push the boundaries,” she commented, adding that she hopes one day all countries make access to abortion legal.

Viewers have been critical of Bettina’s abilities as demonstrated on The Challenge: Spies, Lies & Allies, but her surprise pregnancy changes everything. Bettina had to overcome some serious exhaustion and physical changes that her castmates certainly didn’t have to deal with. It’s also admirable the way Bettina hopes to inspire others with her experience, and though the rookie didn’t win season 37, she’s demonstrated a strength of spirit that could help her to victory on another season.
