The Walking Dead is home to an ensemble of fantastic characters, but there are definitely a few that stand out. Daryl Dixon has been a long-time fan favorite since his season one introduction, and his love life – or lack of one – has been a steady topic of discussion among fans. Specifically, his “will they, won’t they” relationship with Carol that has spanned over the past decade.

Daryl wasn’t the only Dixon bachelor at one point in the series, but with his racist comments and brutish ways, it’s no wonder that Merle never found a love interest. Let’s take a look at 5 characters that would be a good match for Daryl and 5 that would be a better fit for his older brother.

10 Daryl Dixon: Connie

Daryl’s friendship with Carol has always been the “talk of the town” as far as love interests for the broody hunter go, but the addition of Connie in season 9 provided a sweet and lovable alternative.

Connie, a kindhearted deaf woman, works her way into his friend circle with no effort at all. Their adorable communication via notebook and broken sign language is endearing, and no one could blame any fans that collectively “awwed” at their television screens when she signed that they are family.

9 Merle Dixon: Andrea

Merle has never been exactly charming, but that sure doesn’t stop him from trying to flirt. He shares consistent, sassy, back-and-forths with Andrea throughout season two and season three.

The tough blonde is unimpressed by Merle’s sexist nicknames like “honeybunch” and has no problem hurling insults straight back. When he asks her why they never slept together before he was abandoned and joined up with Woodbury, she seems almost flirtatious, despite telling him that it was because he implied she was a lesbian with a rude, slang term.

8 Daryl Dixon: Michonne

Michonne and Daryl’s relationship is cute but understated. Like Daryl, Michonne can be quiet and takes a lot of time to warm up to people, but since early in the show, there has been a clear trust and respect between them. They are both skilled survivors and work well together.

Michonne playfully (maybe even flirtatiously) jokes that she doesn’t mind spending time with Daryl because he’s “already given her fleas.” Their biggest bond is the fact that they were both trapped and tortured by Jocelyn, and had to fight their way out together. That sort of trauma shared with someone just doesn’t go away.

7 Merle Dixon: Laura

Laura is an ex-Savior that joins Alexandria after the fall of the Sanctuary. She has proven herself as tough, smart, and even a little bit cruel throughout her stint in the series. She had no problem with the barbaric ways of Negan and the Saviors, and even seemed to enjoy it, but softens to a degree once she leaves that lifestyle.

All in all, Laura is adaptable. She does what she has to in order to survive, and has a real dark side to her that Merle would find attractive.

6 Daryl Dixon: Beth

Though she was much younger than Daryl, Beth’s friendship with Daryl over season four and season five seemed to have the potential to eventually bloom into a romance many years down the line.

Daryl has a difficult time expressing his feelings, and most of the time, he’s content to just push them down. Beth is soft and sweet and wears her emotions on her sleeve. There is something pure and gentle about her spirit, and Daryl clearly benefited from her calming energy. She is one of the few people that Daryl has bonded with, and it makes sense, considering his less than loving upbringing.

5 Merle Dixon: Jadis

Anne, also known as Jadis, is a strong leader that values the safety of herself and her own people above all. She has no qualms with lying or trickery in order to ensure that her group is protected.

These are traits that Merle would find admirable, especially given his own group left him chained on a roof, forcing him to saw his own hand off in order to survive. He would probably also really enjoy her spiky, Walker “pet” that she uses to threaten enemies.

4 Daryl Dixon: Aaron

Daryl’s sexuality has been a constant question throughout the span of the series. Is he straight and in love with Carol? Is he gay? Is he asexual? His friendship with Aaron developed so quickly that it caused some talk among fans.

Aaron is a survivor, but he has far from lost his humanity. He is one of the first people to notice when Daryl is struggling with life in Alexandria, and he goes out of is way to try to make him more comfortable. Above all, he is empathetic and seeks to understand others before counting them as enemies.

3 Merle Dixon: Deanna

Merle needs a strong woman that he can go head-to-head with (and preferably lose and learn something), and Deanna Monroe would definitely give him a run for his money. She is one of the previous leaders of Alexandria and was a congresswoman in Ohio before the apocalypse.

Deanna is highly intelligent, resilient, and will stand her ground in the face of a fight. She has a heck of a poker face and even says at one point that she could have been a professional poker player if she had ever lost a political race.

2 Daryl Dixon: Carol

Even if they never cross the threshold into romance, Carol and Daryl are soulmates. They are intensely loyal to one another, without stepping on each other’s toes. They understand each other, enjoy each other’s company, and they have the uncanny ability to communicate without speaking.

Carol is one of the few people that Daryl allows to give him physical and emotional affection, and he gives it back to her in return. It says a lot that the pair even planned to run away together. Carol and Daryl are meant to be together, but if it’s as friends or lovers, only time will tell.

1 Merle Dixon: Alpha

There’s something animalistic and unbridled about Merle that would be intensely attracted to a wild sort of woman like Alpha that lives by rules like “survival of the fittest.” Alpha would have no problem at all putting him in his place when he needs it, and remind him exactly where he belongs is in their “wolf pack” of Whisperers.

Much like Negan, Alpha may need to teach Merle some manners and how to keep his mouth shut, but knowing Merle, he probably wouldn’t mind.
