Here’s how to stay alive – at least a little longer – in The Division: Survival. Ubisoft has made many games that bear the name of late author Tom Clancy, including the Splinter Cell franchise and the Rainbox Six games. The Division joined that line-up in 2016, with the original game being an online, multiplayer-focused shooter. It takes place in the aftermath of a virus outbreak in New York, which caused the deaths of millions and the island to be quarantined. Players step into the shoes of a Division operative, who are civilians trained to help keep the peace following a catastrophe.

The Division would go on to become one of Ubisoft’s best-selling games and grossed over $300 million worldwide. A sequel arrived three years later in the form of The Division 2, which moved the action to Washington D.C. The sequel was also considered superior to its predecessor, which received somewhat mixed reviews during its initial release due to balancing issues. A movie adaptation is also in development at Netflix, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain attached to the main roles.

A new mode for the game dubbed The Division: Survival arrived in late 2016 and more than earns its subtitle. This finds players stranded in New York during a blizzard after their helicopter crashes. This leaves them with a measly pistol and no gear, plus an infection that will kill them within an hour. To win, players have to gear up and head into the Dark Zone for extraction by helicopter – which won’t be easy. Here are some key tips for staying alive in Survival.

The Heat Is On

The Division: Survival takes place in the middle of a snowstorm, meaning the moment players head outdoors they start to freeze. One of the top priorities is to craft, loot or find warm clothing, which slows how fast the warmth bar decreases. Clothes can be looted from bodies or stolen from wardrobes. Barrels can also be lit to provide heat.

Take Your Medicine

A disease is killing players in The Division: Survival, but its progress can be slowed by taking painkillers or medication. Take these the moment they’re found, but while players will develop resistance to medicine with each use, it buys valuable time.

Thirst For Victory

As if heat and disease weren’t stressful enough, players need to manage hunger and thirst too. Hunger is important for health regeneration in The Division: Survival – if the player is hungry, health bars will stop regenerating beyond a certain bar, leaving them more vulnerable. To combat this, eat any found energy bars or canned goods, which can typically be found in fridges or backpacks.

Thirst affects environmental awareness – which is key in a blizzard. Drinking water or soda can help highlight loot, and a pro tip is taking a drink when entering an area known for its high levels of loot.

Pick On Someone Your Own Size

Starting with a pistol in The Division: Survival puts players at an immediate disadvantage, so if going up against elites or powerful NPCs, make sure to have decent firepower first. Always aim for the head too for the quickest takedowns.

Go Ballistic

While managing health in The Division: Survival, crafting a ballistic shield can be a real lifesaver and is useful in a whole variety of conflicts, especially with the Hunters.

Become The Hunter

Once players have crafted a Virus Filter and flare gun and headed for the Dark Zone, life gets real interesting. The final step of winning The Division: Survival involves calling for helicopter extraction with the flare, but this spawns in Hunters. These beasts have First Aid Heal and must be killed to win; they also spawn in equal to the number of players, so two players equals two Hunters.

To take down a hunter in The Division: Survival, it’s important to bombard them so they can’t heal. Set up a position with lots of cover, deploy a turret, throw grenades and pepper them with high-end weapons; don’t forget that ballistic shield either.
