Regardless of the writers’ intentions, Gee and Tipper’s undeniable chemistry takes on a mind of its own from the start. Drummer and Naomi met in season 2 when the crew of the Rocinante arrived on Ceres Station where Drummer served as OPA leader Fred Johnson’s second-in-command. The two bonded together and grew closer in season 3 when Naomi left Holden and the Roci crew to join Drummer—now captain of the Belter warship the Behemoth—as her chief engineer. During this time, Naomi professed her loyalty to Drummer as Klaes Ashford took over the role of the ship’s second officer and undermined Drummer’s command. Naomi eventually left the Behemoth shortly after Drummer opted to fire on the Roci when Clarissa’s forged tape painted Holden as a terrorist.
Although The Expanse falls short of confirming a past romance between Drummer and Naomi, season 6’s premiere suggests that their dynamic has always transcended a one-sided affair. Each has found love in different forms over The Expanse’s six seasons, as Naomi has long committed her heart to Holden, while Drummer’s aforementioned polyamorous family materialized in season 5—though not without losing three members by the end. Drummer’s soft spot for Naomi permeates her arc from its beginning, however, the remnants of Naomi’s love for Drummer appear clearest in The Expanse season 6.
Even though the pair haven’t interacted in person since season 3’s finale, The Expanse most recently established Drummer’s feelings toward Naomi when Drummer referred to her as “a woman I loved” in season 5 when she presumed Naomi dead. Despite the pair’s romantic tension, it appeared that Naomi never reciprocated Drummer’s affection. The revelation that Naomi reached out to Drummer, sending her a birthday message in season 3, telling her about Ilus and wishing Drummer was with her in season 4, and thanking her for saving the Roci in season 5—all unbeknownst to viewers at the time—imply that Naomi also felt something profound for Drummer. The intended secrecy of the messages perhaps correlates to their concealed affair—albeit in the past.
It’s entirely possible that, while Naomi separated from Holden and joined the Behemoth’s crew in season 3 due to her nostalgia for her Belter roots, the move also stemmed from her budding connection with Drummer. As Naomi departs the warship, she admits, “I came back for the wrong reasons,” to which Drummer replies, “I’m a wrong reason now?” This heavily resembles an interaction between two people who were more to each other than captain and engineer, and likely more than friends. Evidently, the prospect of a serious relationship between Drummer and Naomi dissolved rather quickly, due to Drummer’s polyamory that Naomi doesn’t share, as well as Naomi’s realization that she belongs with Holden and the Roci crew.
Adding more fuel to the fire, a parallel scenario exists in The Expanse novels. Book 6, Babylon’s Ashes, from which season 6 derives, reveals that Michio Pa—whose arc Drummer presently assumes in the show—had a secret romance with the Behemoth’s chief engineer, Sam Rosenberg, in book 3 Abaddon’s Gate. The Expanse manages to mirror this dynamic with two different characters in the show, even without directly confirming that Drummer and Naomi had once been lovers. All in all, Naomi’s past messages to Drummer in The Expanse season 6 provide further context to the pair’s history, unveiling a new, and more convincing, layer to their relationship.
