Spoilers for The Flash #768 ahead!

The Speed Force is the source of power for The Flash and many of DC’s speedsters, and in The Flash #768, readers learn something is changing about the Speed Force, and Wally West may be at the center of it.

Created by writer Mark Waid during his tenure on The Flash in the early 1990s, The Speed Force was first named in 1994’s The Flash #91 and revealed to be a powerful force in the DC Universe, representing movement and one that moves space and time forward. The Flash and other characters with super-speed are able to channel it through a variety of means, allowing them to run at super-fast velocities, some approaching the speed of light. It is one of the most fundamental forces in the DC Universe, but now something has gone wrong with the Speed Force and somehow it ties to Wally West.

Flash #768 issue, written by Jeremy Adams with art by Brandon Peterson, Marco Santucci, and David Lafuente with colors by Mike Atiyeh and Arif Prianto, opens with Wally West retiring as the Flash, but before he does, he wishes to race Barry one last time, and at the conclusion of the race, have Barry sever Wally’s ties to the Speed Force; Wally’s rationale for giving them away is that, if he has them, he will use them. The two begin their race and all is well at first, but Wally disappears into the Speed Force and finds himself leaping through time, his consciousness inhabiting people’s bodies. Meanwhile, in the present, Barry has lost his powers, as have other speedsters. While searching for Wally, Barry speculates on what happened, wondering if the Speed Force is “rebooting.” Green Arrow says the Speed Force may be hurt and licking its wounds, but all conclude that Wally, and his deep connection to the Speed Force, are behind it all.

The Speed Force is a primal force in the DC Universe, one of the energies that permeates the Multiverse (and now the Omniverse), and with the Multiverse getting a reset itself after the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal, it makes sense that the Speed Force may need a fresh start too. What role Wally will play remains to be seen, but he could very well help “heal” the Speed Force; one of the bodies he inhabits is his cousin Bart Allen, the former Impulse—is he leaping into the bodies of speedsters’ past and present? Is there a greater power controlling these jumps? And will Barry get his powers back in time to join the Justice Incarnate?

The Speed Force is an integral part of the DC Universe and the power source for the Flash, so it is likely it will not be gone for long—and somehow Wally West will be responsible.
