This Is Us Theory Why Kate Isn’t In Any Flashforwards (She’s Not Dead)

This Is Us has teased fans of what the Pearson family will be like in the distant future but without any appearances or even mention of Kate (Chrissy Metz), fans are starting to worry about the well-being of Number Two. However, there might be a good reason why she hasn’t popped up in the show’s flash forwards. NBC’s family comedy drama has allowed fans a peak to what lies ahead for the Pearson family thanks to the cliffhanging finale last season.

In the sequence, we see Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Tess (Iantha Richardson), visiting Kevin’s (who was out grabbing food) house where a much-older Rebecca (Mandy Moore) is staying. Toby was also present, while a grown-up Jack was supposedly on his way to meet his family. This Is Us didn’t reveal much during the said scene including how far it is into the future, but fans are mostly worried about the notable absence of Kate.

Theories about the reason for Kate’s nonappearance have since then roamed online. Regardless of the specifics, most of them envision something terrible happened to Number Two, but what if This Is Us is purposefully holding off her reveal in the future because of the potential reveal that the character successfully loses weight? Kate’s weight has always been an issue on the show. It has always played a part in her arc – be it her struggle to have a positive body image or serious health concerns as she tried to get pregnant. However, they’re putting extra emphasis on it this season via the brewing tension between her and Toby (Chris Sullivan) who was revealed to have actually shed some pounds off.

We know that Kate has tried to lose weight before. She met Toby at a Weight Watchers session back in season 1 and even entered a retreat for the cause, but her efforts somehow always get lost in the mix of family drama and goings-on. Prior to that, she’s noticeably slimmer during her teenage days a year after Jack’s death (despite unconsciously binge eating shortly after his tragic demise). Assuming that this is indeed the case, seeing Kate successfully follow through with her weight-loss journey would be a great feel-good ending for the character.

This is the perfect plot twist for her story since many of the theories surrounding about her flash forward absence thus far suggest that something bad will happen to her. We’ve seen This Is Us pose the idea of Kate suffering a serious health condition due to her weight and pushing through with it isn’t only tragic, it’s also redundant. While This Is Us doesn’t shy away from depicting tragedies, it would be a bummer to see the show ending with Kevin and Randall living their good lives while Kate gets a sad narrative. If anything, This Is Us’ brilliance lies on its ability to always end an episode or season on at least a neutral note, and it’s safe to assume that this will also reflect on its overall narrative structure.

Metz has been open about the idea of actually losing the weight for the part, especially if it sells how Kate’s arc in the show shapes up. Obviously, this won’t happen overnight and there will be a process involved which might risk spoiling this potential plot twist way before it plays out on the screen. However, similar to how they made Sullivan look heavier than he actually on the show, they can be crafty in keeping it a secret until it’s time for the reveal.
