The wildly successful Hunger Games series ended with the release of Mockingjay Part 2 in 2015. The impact of the franchise, however, has lasted, and many fans still mourn the loss of some of their favorite characters they watched die onscreen. Katniss suffered through many losses but ultimately managed to find a happy ending with Peeta and their children.

In order to overthrow a violent fascist government, Katniss and her allies had to fight back. Despite her best efforts, Katniss couldn’t save everyone she cared about. Here is a list of the 10 saddest deaths in the series.

10 Cato

While at first Cato might have been presented as a villain, the moments before his death in The Hunger Games gave more context to the character. Raised from a young age to fight in order to make his District proud, Cato never knew any other life than that of a hopeful victor. He may have been bloodthirsty and cruel, but he never knew any other way. Katniss seems to realize this in his last moments, shooting him with an arrow as an act of mercy.

9 Castor

Although he may not have had the most screen time, the effect that Castor’s death has on his brother is heartbreaking to watch. In Mockingjay Part 2, Castor dies in the tunnels underneath the capital, after President Snow sends horrifying mutations after Katniss and her squadron. His death is quick, but the effect it has on his brother is immediate and very, very sad.

8 Thresh

Thresh, one of the tributes from District 11 in Katniss’ first Hunger Games, didn’t spend much time socializing. He immediately established himself as a major player in the games, claiming his territory and fending off the Career pack on his own.

When Katniss went to the Cornucopia to get the medicine that would save Peeta’s life, Thresh could have killed her, but spared her life instead, after hearing that Katniss had been allied with Rue. His death occurred offscreen, but still had an effect on Katniss (and the audience).

7 Mags

Mags was a character that, like Katniss, we couldn’t help but like. Despite being physically weak, she volunteered for Annie, Finnick’s future wife, so that the mentally unstable young woman wouldn’t have to face another Hunger Games and could have a chance at a life with Finnick.

Mags showed her selfless nature once again in the 75 Hunger Games when she gave her life so that the others could escape the poisonous fog the Gamemakers had unleashed on them. Her death was tragic, but ultimately very heroic.

6 Wiress

It’s easy to feel bad for all of the characters that died in the Quarter Quell, since they were promised a peaceful life after being subjected to the Games in their childhood. Wiress was intelligent and kind, and Katniss took an instant liking to her. Her discovery that the arena operated like a clock helped her allies immensely, and our heart broke with Beetee’s when we watched her die at the hands of one of the careers.

5 Boggs

Boggs was a leading figure in the rebellion against the Capitol. He was known for his excellent leadership and strong moral compass. He always had Katniss’ back, even when it meant going against President Coin, and he made choices with integrity.

Played excellently by Mahershala Ali in the Mockingjay movies, Boggs was a character that audiences immediately liked and trusted. With his dying breath, he gave over command to Katniss, putting all of his faith in her and finally allowing her to take matters into her own hands.

4 Cinna

Cinna, Katniss’ stylist, was the first person from the Capitol to take a real interest in her and to show her kindness. A talented designer, Cinna used his skill to help draw attention to Katniss before the Games so that she could get sponsors. Despite the danger it would put him in, he also used his skill to aid the rebellion.

In a choice that would ultimately lead to his death, he designed Katniss’ wedding dress so that it would go up in flames, revealing a mockingjay dress complete with wings- the symbol of Katniss’ token, and a symbol of rebellion in the Districts.

3 Finnick

Finnick Odair, the winner from District 4, was charming, flirtatious, and arrogant. Underneath his public persona, he was also a loyal and loving friend. He secretly joined the rebellion and helped keep Katniss and Peeta alive in the Quarter Quell.

While living in District 13, he bonded with Katniss over their worry for their loved ones being held hostage in the Capitol. His kind, loving nature made those around him feel safe. His death in Mockingjay was definitely one of the most brutal and devastating in the series.

2 Rue

When Katniss volunteered for her sister in The Hunger Games, Rue immediately reminded her of Prim. Her youth and sweet innocence endeared her to the audience, but made the likelihood of her surviving the Games very slim.

When she saved Katniss from the Career pack by alerting her to the tracker jacker nest, the two decided to team up. Rue lured the Careers out from their camp while Katniss blew up their supplies. In a tearjerking scene, Rue is killed by another tribute before Katniss can save her. Katniss sings to her until she dies, and covers her in flowers. Rue’s death affects Katniss long after her first Games.

1 Prim

The story begins with Prim’s name being called at the reaping; Katniss volunteers and the rest is history. Primrose, Katniss’ younger sister, is the most important person in her life. The events that are set in motion are all due to her initial desire to protect her little sister, which is why Prim’s death at the end of the war is so devastating. Prim had trained to be a medic in District 13 and rushed to help the wounded when a series of rebellion bombs went off. What no one saw coming was the second set of bombs, killing Prim and many others, and effectively ending the war with their brutality.
