Though technically, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a show for children technically, it’s been enjoyed by people of all ages. Despite the younger audience, this series deals with many complex and nuanced themes, and there are some heavy and traumatic events that happen to the main characters.

All of the main heroes on the show deal with some difficulties in their youth, and they go through more than most adults ever will at a young age. Yet, they are still heroic and inspiring.

10 When Aang lost Appa

Probably one of the absolute saddest moments for fans of the show was when Appa was stolen by sand benders and traded around.

The “Appa’s Lost Days” segment was heartbreaking and showed all that App went through when separated from Aang, and the experience was also horrible for Aang himself who lost a being he loved. Given how much Aang had already been through, it was horrible all around.

9 The Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula

This epic fight scene between Zuko and Azula is memorable in many ways for fans. While the animation and music were stunning, the emotional element of the scene made it even more powerful.

While Azula might have been a troubling villain, Zuko still did care about her and felt pity for her. It was clearly upsetting for him to see her devolve so much, and he didn’t really feel any joy in her defeat.

8 Aang finding Gyatso’s body

Aang is only 12 years old when he has to save the world from Ozai and the Fire Nation, and this is a terrible burden for anyone to have to handle, much less a child.

After losing pretty much everyone he’d ever known, it was heart-wrenching to see Aang come across the skeleton of his friend and mentor Monk Gyatso. It was definitely one of the darkest moments of the series.

7 Jet’s death

Jet is a rather problematic character because he was willing to use violence against innocent people to achieve his ends. However, his death was still traumatic for Team Avatar.

This moment, while not entirely shown or clarified on screen, was a very real and upsetting one for a children’s show. This just goes to show that The Last Airbender didn’t shy away from handling realistic and mature topics. Jet’s death was one of the more intense moments for the characters.

6 Toph’s parents being overbearing to an extreme degree

Toph might be a total badass and earth bending master, but she had a rather difficult childhood. While her parents might have thought they were protecting her by keeping her away from the world, they were really doing her no favors.

The amount of control they had over her was abusive in many ways, and it was extremely upsetting how they infantilized her because she was blind.

5 Zuko being burned and banished by Ozai

Firelord Ozai is a tyrannical and evil ruler who wanted power and control, and he was also just as bad to his own children. While he favored Azula, he always saw Zuko as weak.

The fact that he burned Zuko in a fight because Zuko spoke out of turn is abusive and disgusting. This is such a horrible thing for a parent to do to a child that it’s hard to believe it happened on a children’s show.

4 Zuko’s father being willing to sacrifice him

Most of the main characters from the series had horrible childhoods in one way or another, but Zuko’s is probably the overall worst. While his mother did love him and protect him, Ozai was always a monster. The fact that Ozai was willing to sacrifice Zuko to appease Azulson is awful on so many levels.

If it wasn’t for Ursa making the choice to poison Azulon to save Zuko, he most certainly wouldn’t have survived.

3 The death of Iroh’s son

There are actually many upsetting deaths that happen in the series, and one of the most heartbreaking is the fact that Iroh lost his only son Lu Ten during the war.

While this event happened before the plot of the series, the episode where Iroh gives tribute to Lu Ten on his birthday will always stand out for fans because it was so sad.

2 Sokka and Katara losing their mother

Zuko had a really rough childhood, too, but so did Sokka and Katara. While they had loving parents, they both lost their mother to the Fire Nation Army.

This death was particularly traumatizing for Katara because she witnessed it, but of course, it was also super sad for Sokka. Losing a parent at any age is rough, and they were just kids.

1 Aang losing nearly everyone he loved

While the trauma of the other main characters is quite intense, nothing can compare to the number of people that Aang lost. By waking up a hundred years in the future, he lost everyone he ever knew with a couple of exceptions.

He lost his family and his friends, and the Fire Nation also committed genocide and tried to wipe out his entire culture. Aang was definitely strong to be able to handle such an incalculable loss.
