Many fans know that at the heart of The O.C., the central plotlines revolve around the theme of friendship. Whether it was Seth and Ryan’s bromance or the sisterhood between Summer and Marissa, the fans enjoyed watching their loyalty to each other grow, despite external forces trying to tear them apart.

However, there did come a time where fans couldn’t help but wonder if Summer and Marissa’s friendship would have lasted beyond season 3. Not only did the teens outgrow each other but the mutual respect they once had also disappeared as soon as Marissa began dating Volchok. Want to know why Summer and Marissa wouldn’t have lasted? Keep reading to discover the 10 reasons why the teens weren’t real friends.

10 Marissa never checks up on Summer

While Summer and Marissa made amends near the end of season 3, the friends still had a long way to go if the viewers judged it by Marissa’s lack of concern for Summer’s well-being. In the episode “The Party Favor,” the core four attend prom with Taylor, Teresa, Volchok, and Anna in tow.

When Summer realizes that Anna is going to be Seth’s date, the high school student decides to get drunk. Marissa doesn’t seem concerned with her friend’s well-being until she falls off the boat. Instead of sending her home, Marissa allows Summer to attend the after-party and then completely forgets about her. A good friend would have ensured she was okay and not passed out in her own vomit.

9 Summer leaves Marissa in the driveway

Similar to the previous entry, Summer and Marissa couldn’t have had that good of a friendship to begin with when Summer also abandoned a drunk Marissa. In the “Premiere,” Summer and Marissa attend a party at Holly’s house.

Later on in the episode, Marissa is seen getting escorted by Summer and Holly, who proceeds to leave her passed out in the driveway. They say they didn’t want to get her in trouble with her dad, yet fail to realize they ended up putting Marissa in more danger by leaving her outside. A responsible friend would have cared more about a person’s safety then if they got in trouble.

8 Marissa’s drama with Volchok

Another issue that caused a lot of drama between Marissa and Summer was when Marissa began to date Volchok. In the aftermath of Johnny’s death, Marissa went down a destructive path that saw her shun her family and close friends.

No matter how much Summer tried to reach out to Marissa, she continued to push them away and began hanging out with Volchok and his friends. She also begins to neglect her school work and starts drinking during the day. Instead of talking to Marissa about her troubles, Summer decides to get into argument with her and criticizes her life choices. It just caused the pair to grow further apart.

7 Summer’s friendship with Taylor

Season 3 was a turning point in Marissa and Summer’s friendship as the future environmentalist ended up growing closer to Taylor Townsend. As Marissa began to make new friends at Newport Union School, Summer engaged in a rivalry with Taylor. However, once she and Seth recognized how lonely she was, Summer befriended her.

Taylor then became a much more reliable friend for Summer than Marissa, helping the Brown student to figure out why Seth broke up with her and encouraging her to believe in herself. Fans enjoyed watching the Taylor-Summer scenes more because their friendship wasn’t filled with drama (whereas Summer always had to look out for Marissa).

6 Marissa was never there for Summer

Another element that showed why Summer and Marissa weren’t true friends was that it was one-sided (on Summer’s part). It came to the point where Summer looked more like Marissa’s babysitter than a friend as the environmentalist would have to keep an eye on her as she spiraled (e.g. Tijuana, Johnny’s death, Ryan leaving Newport).

Yet, when the shoe was on the other foot, Marissa could only spare Summer five minutes. When Summer was feeling insecure about her and Seth’s future, Taylor who reassured her they would be fine. When Summer struggles during the holidays without her mother, Marissa is too engrossed with the Johnny drama. If they were such good friends, Marissa would have known how tough the holidays were for her.

5 They stopped confiding in each other

Summer and Marissa’s friendship also struggled when the pair began to stop communicating. It is easy to blame one person and not the other when a strong friendship has to be based on communication and trust. As mentioned in the previous entries, Marissa stopped confiding in Summer after Johnny’s death.

If Marissa didn’t know of Summer’s personal struggles then fans can also assume that she didn’t feel comfortable enough. With the pair also hanging out in different social circles by season 3, it wouldn’t have been surprising if the friendship just ceased to exist.

4 Marissa never appreciated Summer’s efforts

The relationship between Marissa and Summer wasn’t always so strong when Marissa was seen to take Summer for granted. All fans know that the writers gave Marissa a hard time over the three years, with the teen suffering more than any other character. Luckily for her, she had a good network of friends that were willing to support her.

Especially Summer, who would do anything to make her friend feel better. Remember that time she helped to redecorate Marissa’s bedroom to make her feel more at home in Jimmy’s apartment? Or when she refused to allow Taylor to take Marissa’s place as a social chair? It always seemed like Marissa would take more than she would give.

3 Summer values her reputation more than friendship

In season 1, Summer wasn’t always that good of a friend to Marissa when she began to value her reputation more than their friendship. In “The Debut,” Marissa and Summer are about to attend their first cotillion ball together, with Luke agreeing to escort Marissa and Seth agreeing to escort Summer.

However, Marissa ends up dropping out when she notices the tensions between Luke and Ryan. Instead of helping her friend sooth the awkwardness between them all, Summer sees an opportunity to ditch Seth and asks Luke to take her. She didn’t seem to even care that her best friend was ditching the most important event in their teenage lives.

2 Where was Marissa during the Seth breakup?

When Summer and Seth were going through a tough time, Marissa was noticeably absent in the aftermath of the breakup. In “The Dawn Patrol,” Summer was seen to be disheartened by the fact that Seth had decided that he didn’t want to go to Brown University with her.

When Summer decided to find out the reason why he didn’t, she made one last grand gesture by replicating the coffee cart incident from season 1. However, she was soon left heartbroken when Seth admitted that he didn’t love her anymore. Since Marissa is her best friend, one would have expected she would seek comfort in her. Instead, she went to Taylor which shows their relationship wasn’t as strong as it used to be.

1 Where was Summer during the Oliver fiasco?

Considering that Summer and Marissa were the best of friends, she was also noticeably absent during the Oliver fiasco. In “The Truth,” the Ryan-Marissa-Oliver drama came to a head when the Cohens rushed to Marissa’s aid after Oliver held her hostage.

As Marissa’s best friend, one would think that she would have been just as concerned with Oliver’s behavior as Luke and Ryan. However, Summer had become too invested in sabotaging Anna and Seth’s relationship that she failed to see the danger her friend was in. It seemed like she was far more interested in her own drama to notice anyone else’s.
