The Pokémon Games Didn’t Prepare Us For Temtem’s Brutal Battles

If you thought that Pokémon was hard and prepared you for Temtem’s brutal difficulty, you would be wrong.

Temtem came out last week as the Pokémon MMO we’d always wanted. Many of Pokémon’s core gameplay transferred over with minor tweaks to make the game a little more interesting (and so that Nintendo couldn’t sue). However, you’re still following the same general plot as Pokémon: you’re a kid who goes to meet a professor to start your journey to becoming a Temtem tamer. You even have a hyperactive rival.

However, whereas Pokémon games generally let you beat your rival in your first match, Temtem’s rival kicks your butt (unless you pick Crystle as your starter — then it’s a fair fight), and that trend generally continues as the game progresses.

Oh, don’t get us wrong: Temtem isn’t some Dark Souls-version of Pokémon. It’s still bright and happy and cheerful, with plenty of items to pick up and make your journey easier. However, recent Pokémon games have gotten soft when it comes to difficulty. Nintendo ensures that Pokémon’s target demographic is around 6 or 7 years old, and recent Pokémon games reflect that. Early gyms often have type disadvantages against starter Pokémon, and even if they don’t, there’s at least one Pokémon you can catch in the wild that has a type advantage over what you’ll face.

On top of that, there are so many NPCs that will just randomly heal your entire party that a skilled player barely needs to use a Potion.

Temtem isn’t like that. Temtem is targetted at an older, more mature audience that grew up playing Pokémon before it became a kids’ game. They remember Whitney’s Miltank from the days of Pokémon Gold & Silver, how they needed to strategize and grind up their Pokémon’s levels before they could progress past Goldenrod City Gym. We remember. We still have the scars.

Temtem is a challenge, but it’s not an insurmountable one. Players on the Temtem subreddit are reporting roadblocks that Pokémon absolutely did not prepare them for, but very few people are complaining about it. In fact, some are even saying that the difficulty is a welcome change from Pokémon and makes Temtem superior to Sword & Shield.

Your mileage will vary, of course, but one thing is for sure: Temtem is not your average Pokémon game — at least, not when it comes to difficulty.
