The Promised Neverland is full of tragic demises, but Conny was the first character to die – here’s her sad death explained and how it kickstarts the plot of the series. The Promised Neverland is a manga created by Kaui Shirai that was adapted into a two-season anime series by CloverWorks. It’s set in a not-too-distant future – the year 2045 to be precise – and follows a trio of orphans named Emma, Norman and Ray who live under the watchful eye of their caretaker Isabella at a children’s home called Grace Field House.
Emma, Norman, Ray and their fellow orphans live a pretty idyllic life as they wait to be adopted – they’re well-fed, carefree and thrive in the care of their pseudo-mother. There are a few strange things about life at Grace Field House, however. Not only are the kids not allowed to venture beyond the orphanage boundaries, they also have to take daily IQ tests. Soon enough, Emma and her pals discover there’s something nefarious going on behind the scenes and the death of a six-year-old orphan girl named Conny is the impetus behind the big reveal.
In the very first chapter and episode of The Promised Neverland, Conny is set to leave Grace Field House after being adopted. When Emma and Norman realize that Conny has left behind her favorite stuffed toy, they race after her only to discover Conny’s dead body in the back of a truck parked at the gate that encloses the orphanage. Hearing voices approach, Emma and Norman hide under the truck and witness a trio of grotesque monsters preserving Conny’s body in a jar and talking about the top-quality meat they procure from this particular “farm.”
Emma and Norman come to the terrifying realization Grace Field House isn’t an orphanage after all, but a farm that grows children as livestock for the anime’s demons. The reason the kids aren’t allowed beyond the walls is so they don’t discover the demon-infested wastelands that surround the children’s home, and the reason they take daily IQ tests is because intelligent children make for tastier food. They also learn that not only is their caretaker Isabella complicit but that Emma, Norman and Ray – as the highest scoring orphans on the tests – are set to be shipped out next to meet the same fate as poor Conny.
As tragic as Conny’s death was, it was what lead Emma and Norman to discover the gruesome truth about Grace Field House and pushed them into plotting their escape. Moreover, Conny’s demise sets the tone of The Promised Neverland as dark dystopian series that doesn’t shy away from shocking plot twists.
