Here’s the rap battle video that inspired Key & Peele’s “Hype Man” sketch from season 3. Key & Peele is a Comedy Central sketch series fronted by Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele. The series became renowned for regularly churning out fantastic sketches that went viral, and it speaks to the quality of the show that many of its skits are still in heavy rotation. Key & Peele came to an end in 2015 after five seasons, with its stars later starring in action-comedy Keanu.

Jordan Peele is best known now as a horror filmmaker, having made a major splash with 2017’s Get Out. This low-budget chiller from Blumhouse rode a wave of critical praise to become a huge hit, and its writer/director later won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. By this stage, Peele is fully immersed in the genre, having directed doppelganger horror Us in 2019 and producing movies and TV shows like Nia DaCosta’s upcoming Candyman legacy sequel starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Key & Peele wasn’t afraid to draw on real-life for inspiration for their sketches, which is how “Hype Man” came to be. This sees Keegan’s rapper getting into an intense rap battle, which is quickly overwhelmed by Peele’s overzealous hype man. He screeches at every verse and this soon escalates to shoving and pushing everyone around him, which quickly becomes unsettling to the crowd. It also becomes hilarious to some of the extras, with a group of them turning away from the camera at one point to mask their laughter at Peele’s performance.

Key & Peele’s “Hype Man” is actually inspired by this famous rap battle from iBattleTV between Young Steady and K-Kendle. Young Steady’s hype man screams and yells over him, and at one point starts hitting him so hard with his cap the rapper subtly shields himself from the blows. It’s hilarious and unsettling at the same time, and if anything the Key & Peele sketch almost tones things down. Most of Jordan Peele’s performance is pulled straight from this rap battle, though it obviously lacks the ending.

Key & Peele’s “Hype Man” takes things a step further, with Key taking Peele’s hype man to a lake. Key wants him to imagine a world where his exaggerated yelling and shoving is accepted, before slowly raising a revolver behind his head and shooting him. This is borrowed from the heartbreaking ending to John Steinbeck’s Of Mice And Men, which is an unexpectedly poignant final scene to a skit like “Hype Man.”
