When it comes to The Simpsons, there has yet to be a prankster who is as iconic as Springfield’s regular bad boy, Bart Simpson. For the last 30 years, fans have watched as Bart got up to all sorts of mischief, ranging from harmless pranks to some illegal activities. While they are enjoyable, sometimes Bart takes it too far when he ends up hurting his loved ones.

However, some were able to spot that this is all a defense mechanism. Beyond the bad boy exterior, fans have been able to see that Bart is just an insecure and lost child trying to find his way in the world. While he can be cruel, there have also been moments where fans couldn’t help but empathize with him.

10 Hated: Torturing Skinner With A Peanut

Bart has done some terrible things in his time but one of the worst things he ever did was torture Skinner with a peanut. In “Please Homer, Don’t Hammer ‘Em,” Bart finds out that Skinner is allergic to peanuts and decides to use this knowledge to his advantage.

First, he uses the knowledge for personal gain, not allowing Skinner to defend himself when hitting him with tennis balls and cola cans. Then Bart publically humiliates him by making him read a childish poem. He takes it one step too far when he makes Skinner have an allergic reaction. Skinner could have died.

9 Sympathetic: Bart Falls Down The Well

While Bart was wrong for trying to pull this prank, fans couldn’t help but feel a little sympathy for the boy when he fell down a well. After realizing he could get into trouble for his prank, Bart went to retrieve the device but ended up getting trapped once Eddie and Lou untie his rope. Instead of helping him, the two officers abandon Bart there in revenge.

Since he tricked the town, none of the other residents are willing to help him either. It’s sad to watch as Homer and Marge were unable to comfort Bart as he got upset over what he could miss out on…



8 Hated: Angry Dad

For some reason, Bart seemed to find great pleasure by creating pranks that would put his family in danger. In “I Am Furious (Yellow),” Bart creates ‘Angry Dad,’ which is a comic book that is inspired by Homer. When Bart starts running out of ideas, he decides to set up a prank that and hopes to trigger off one of Homer’s outbursts.

However, it proves to be quite dangerous. Not only could Homer have broken his neck by falling through the treehouse but he could have been injured when he was dragged through the cacti. It was a reckless decision…

In “Bart Sells His Soul,” the fourth-grader is forced to go on a spiritual quest after he decides to sell his soul to Milhouse. Although Bart doesn’t care at first, he soon regrets his decision when he finds that he cannot find enjoyment in things he used to.

As a result, Bart becomes severely depressed and anxious. He even becomes plagued by nightmares because of this stress. It’s quite emotional to see him get upset and beg God to give him it back because he’s worried…

6 Hated: Putting Himself In Harm’s Way To Show Lisa Up

While Bart was capable of being a good brother, most of the time he decided to make life hell for his sister – especially if she is given more attention than him. This was proven to be the case in “My Sister, My Sitter” when Bart decides to teach her a lesson after Homer and Marge put her in charge.


He begins to act childishly and defiant, refusing to eat his dinner or go to bed when he is asked. Let’s not forget how he falls down the stairs and makes his injury worse on purpose. He could be extremely childish when he wanted to be.

5 Sympathetic: First Heartbreak

First crushes are something that no one ever forgets and this was proven to be true for Bart when he got his heart broken by Laura Powers. In “New Kid on the Block” Bart ends up falling for his babysitter and plans on telling her his feelings. However, he soon devastated to discover that she is dating Jimbo Jones.

Fans couldn’t help but sympathize with the 10-year-old, especially when they could see the tremendous pain he was in through the heart being ripped out of his chest. It’s one of those moments where he needed his family’s support.

4 Hated: Ruining Lisa’s Friendships

Once more, Bart proved himself to be a terrible brother when he sabotaged Lisa out of jealousy. In “Summer of 4 Ft 2,” Bart grew jealous when Lisa became more popular than him with a group of skateboarders. For revenge, he takes great pleasure in humiliating her by showing all her accomplishments and lack of friends.

Even after she runs off crying, Bart takes great pleasure in her pain. He even continues to defend his actions until he sees that his actions had deeply affected her.

3 Sympathetic: Marge Accuses Him Of Stealing

Although Bart doesn’t give Marge the easiest of times, sometimes he makes a grand gesture to show how much he appreciates her. It’s just too bad that Marge always thinks the worst. Remember “Marge Not Be Proud” when he is caught shoplifting and Marge refuses to acknowledge him?

Bart decides to win his mother’s love back by getting a photograph of himself. While he tries to keep it a surprise, Marge ruins it when she insists he has been stealing again. It must have been hard for Bart to realize he had lost her trust.

2 Hated: Made Skinner Believe His Mother Was Dead

While Bart’s pranks are often harmless, sometimes the 10-year-old takes it a step too far and causes some irrevocable damage. An example of this being in “Yellow Subterfuge” when Bart decides he will try to get revenge on Skinner for leaving him out of a school trip.

Out of all the ideas, Bart decides to make Skinner believe his mother has been murdered and he is the killer. Bart even tries to convince him to start a life on the run. He doesn’t even look remorseful. It truly is a despicable moment.

1 Sympathetic: Cried Over Grades

Out of all the episodes, fans will agree that one of Bart’s more emotional scenes had to be when he cried over his grades. In “Bart Gets an ‘F’,” Bart is devastated to learn he may have to repeat the fourth grade if he failed another test. As a result, he decides to study for the exam.

Despite all his hard efforts, Bart initially fails the test, which causes him to break down into tears. It’s horrible to watch as he tells Edna that nothing he does is ever good enough and there’s no point in him even trying anymore. Especially when they witnessed how hard he studied.
