In the annals of TV history, certain shows have managed to transcend the medium, and become pop culture phenomenons. Some such shows include The X-Files, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and of course, The Simpsons. The advantage The Simpsons has over any other primetime scripted series is longevity. Currently in season 30, The Simpsons has been on TV longer than the other previously mentioned shows combined.
While FOX has played host to many other iconic shows, The Simpsons’ sheer staying power has allowed it to become almost an unofficial mascot for the network, and it’s almost impossible for many fans to even imagine a FOX without The Simpsons in its programming line-up. This apparently includes many FOX executives, as following a report in January that the network was looking to renew The Simpsons for two more seasons, a deal to do just that has now officially been struck.

As reported by Deadline, The Simpsons has now been renewed for seasons 31 and 32, guaranteeing that it will keep airing on FOX through at least the 2020-2021 TV season. While this move was mostly expected, there had been some industry conjecture that Disney might opt to try and cash in by canceling The Simpsons and then being able to negotiate a lucrative new syndication deal. For now though, it seems like The Simpsons is safe.
It’s unclear at present how many episodes season 31 and season 32 of The Simpsons will consist of, but this renewal is said to get the series past the 700-episode mark, all the way to 713 to be precise. Most Simpsons seasons are 22 episodes long, so assuming that’s the case for season 30, it’ll end with 661 episodes aired. If one adds two more seasons of 22 episodes to 661, the result is 705, suggesting that one or both new seasons will consist of more than the standard 22 episodes in order to get to 713. That concludes the math portion of this article.
Many fans had previously figured that The Simpsons would finally call it quits after season 30, ending on a historic anniversary. With seasons 31 and 32 now happening, that begs the question of when the show will actually end. Perhaps it’ll keep running until one of the main cast members is no longer among the living, which will of course hopefully not be for quite a long time to come. It’s crazy to think about sometimes, but people born after 1989 have never known a world without The Simpsons in it, and as much as some like to complain about its decline in quality over the years, the ratings remain consistently good. Homer could theoretically keep embarrassing his family for decades to come, as long as Disney wants that to happen.
