The DC Extended Universe had some work to do when it began production on a sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad. That movie was a massive disappointment, as it was blasted by critics and certified rotten at Rotten Tomatoes. To amend things, the DCEU started over from scratch and brought in James Gunn, the director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

It was no surprise that people would compare The Suicide Squad to Guardians of the Galaxy. Both movies have teams of misfits set out on a mission that seems to big for them to tackle. Both have humor and heart, all from the mind of one of Hollywood’s unique voices. They both also enjoyed mainstream success, with high scores from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

10 James Gunn Directed Both Films

The biggest similarity The Suicide Squad shares with Guardians of the Galaxy is James Gunn. After Gunn made the first two Guardians movies, Disney fired him because of tweets from the past resurfacing. DC immediately hired him and gave him The Suicide Squad to direct.

Gunn returned to Marvel and will make the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but he has secured a place with DC as well after the success of The Suicide Squad. The movie has his fingerprints all over it, and it even went further into his wheelhouse, allowing him to work with an R-rating this time around.

9 Michael Rooker Was In Both Films

Michael Rooker has worked with James Gunn for a long time. He showed up as a villain in Gunn’s horror movie Slither and came back for the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, playing Yondu. In those movies, he was a Ravager, someone who was not a good guy but wasn’t a pure villain either.

Rooker was back with Gunn for The Suicide Squad as Savant. He was a familiar face for fans, but he was nothing like Yondu. He was a despicable villain, but also a coward at heart.

8 The Music Played A Major Role

James Gunn loves to take music and make it a big part of his movies. It isn’t just about choosing the right songs for Gunn. It is about making them a part of his story, almost a character unto themselves. He did it in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies and that continued in The Suicide Squad.

In all three of Gunn’s superhero movies, the songs help tell the story, blending in with the theme of the scenes they appear in. While The Suicide Squad songs didn’t go retro like in Guardians, the film still featured some terrific tunes, with all of them revealing lyrics that play perfectly with the scene in which they appear.

7 Both Teams Were Outsiders

In Guardians of the Galaxy, a Ravager dealing in stolen objects partners with a mercenary working for Thanos, two bounty hunters, and a muscleman with a thirst for vengeance. They were all wanted by the law and all were outsiders who had no one else to turn to until they found each other and became a family.

In The Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller took a group of villains and sent them on a suicide mission. Bloodsport had given up on life. Ratcatcher 2 was a girl who lost her father and protector. King Shark was a creature who had never known a friend, and Polka-Dot Man came from an abusive childhood. Together, they found each other and became a family.

6 Humor Played Off The Action

James Gunn has mastered the ability to have shockingly violent scenes, but he uses humor to lighten the impact, allowing even the horrific moments to be played off with a laugh. He used this talent in both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad to great effect.

The humor was different here, but it had the same results. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn used sarcastic humor to make his movie stand out from the other MCU superhero releases and it helped change the movies that came later. Gunn used a more lowbrow comedy following wild kills in The Suicide Squad to help it stand out from previous DCEU movies, and it worked just as well.

5 King Shark And Groot Resemble One Another

4 The Good Guys Were Bad People

In both the world of Guardians of the Galaxy and that of The Suicide Squad, the good guys in those worlds are not good people at all. In Guardians of the Galaxy, the ultimate law enforcement agency is the Nova Corps. While there are pure members of that unit, it seems highly corrupt deeply, especially shown in the prison scenes.

In The Suicide Squad, there also proved to be good people on the law enforcement side of things, but mostly, they were amoral, making bets on who would die first. Additionally, Amanda Waller ordered the deaths of thousands of innocent men, women, and children. Meanwhile, the heroes were villains when the movie started and accomplished more good than any “traditional” hero did in either movie.

3 The Teams Have To Save The World

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad presented two teams that seemed drastically different on the outside. One team protects entire planets and flies through the galaxy looking for work. The other is a group of mercenaries working black ops for the government on top-secret missions.

However, both movies took the characters and threw them into a similar circumstance. The Guardians had to stop Ronan from destroying the homeworld of the Nova Corps, and they had to sacrifice to save the planet. In The Suicide Squad, the team fought to stop the alien Starro from destroying a country before it would likely move on to other parts of the Earth, and both teams had to stand up to protect the world.

2 The Family Dynamic

One of the biggest differences between the two Suicide Squad movies was the team dynamic. The first movie was about a team of mercenaries who had very few interpersonal relationships outside of fighting together. The second had the members all connect and become a family, fighting together at the end.

This was the same dynamic as Guardians of the Galaxy. In that movie, the outlaws became a family that cared about each other and protected each other. In The Suicide Squad’s best character story arc, the villains all started working together, with Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, and King Shark bonding in their own ways, Together, they all form a team that worked together as one unit.

1 Nathan Fillion Is Hidden By A Mask In Both Films

For lovers of Easter eggs, there was one actor who appeared in both movies and mostly kept his face covered in both of them. This was Nathan Fillion, who genre fans got to know in Firefly and mainstream audiences got to know in Castle and The Rookie. He also worked with James Gunn in the horror movie Slither.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, he was a prisoner where the Nova Corps sent the Guardians after arresting them. He was the big alien that tried to intimidate them at the start of their “stay.” In The Suicide Squad, he was T.D.K., a member of the first team to hit the beaches at the start of the movie, his face hidden by a mask most of the time.
