Considering what a tiny and mundane town Mystic Falls really is, it’s actually astonishing to see how many terrifying villains and adversaries moseyed on through this Virginian village throughout eight seasons of the CW’s smash hit vampire series The Vampire Diaries.

Of course, despite the wide variety of supernatural creatures in the world, vampires were always king on TVD, and many of their best villains were a part of this befanged bunch. However, two of the most memorable and dangerous vampire villains were undoubtedly Damon Salvatore and Klaus Mikaelson. So, which one of them wears the crown of best vampire villain on the show?

10 Klaus: Because He Was A Planner

The thing that made Klaus such a terrifying and intimidating villain wasn’t just that he was an Original, or a hybrid, or basically indestructible.

What made Klaus such a frightening adversary for the Mystic Falls gang was the fact that by the time he even became a player in their game, he’d already rigged the game so he would win it. He had everything planned out before they even knew who he was.

9 Damon: Because He Was The First Monster

The Vampire Diaries lasted for eight seasons, and in those eight seasons so many villains came and went that it’s almost hard to keep count.

However, one thing that can’t be taken away from Damon Salvatore is the fact that he was the very first villain that the audience was ever introduced to. And to be fair, he was an effective enough villain to make The Vampire Diaries into the instant hit that it was.

8 Klaus: Because He Makes Enemies For An Eternity

All vampires are immortal, but some are more than immortal than others. Unfortunately for Klaus’ enemies, he’s not only just about as immortal as anything can be, but he holds on to his grudges forever.

Once someone has made an enemy of him they’ve got him on his back for the rest of their lives, which can be an eternity for some unlucky people like Katherine Pierce or Trevor and Rose.

7 Damon: Because He Could Be Charming

That’s not to say that Klaus didn’t have his own charms as well, but the thing that made Damon such a dangerous villain was that it seemed like sometimes he was making a turn for the better.

He could be very kind and he could seem genuinely interested in redemption, but if he decided that he wasn’t into it anymore he could turn on a dime, and usually the people around him suffered for it.

6 Klaus: Because He Had Followers

Damon may have been charming, but he didn’t put much effort into expanding his social circle, and that alone made him an easier antagonist to go up against than Klaus.

Klaus was already one of the most powerful supernatural creatures on the planet, but over the years he collected quite a following. Whether it was his family or his admirers, it was a pretty sure guarantee that anyone who had to face off against Klaus wasn’t going up against one man, but an entire squad of Klaus supporters.

5 Damon: Because He Wouldn’t Control His Impulses

When Damon was going to lose his mind and lash out violently against someone, no one ever knew it was coming, least of all Damon.

Damon is a dangerously impulsive person who won’t even take a split second to think about killing someone in many cases, so he’s sort of like a snake in the grass that most people haven’t even noticed until it’s already too late and they’ve already been bitten.

4 Klaus: Because He Wanted To Revolutionize The Supernatural World

One thing that can certainly be said for Klaus is that he didn’t think small. While Damon tends to be more self-centered and reactive, Klaus’ determination to break his hybrid curse wasn’t just about making himself into a true werewolf/vampire combo.

He wanted to be able to turn other werewolves into hybrids and create his own army of hybrids in order to secure supernatural world domination.

3 Damon: Because He Was A Constant Threat To The Protagonists

Klaus may have had big dreams, but for the most part the Mystic Falls gang wasn’t a part of it. Klaus wasn’t personally invested in them unless he had a reason to be, and he wasn’t planning on sticking around and making everyone’s lives miserable forever.

The same really can’t be said for Damon though. He antagonized them constantly from the start, and even as he became more of a part of the group, he wouldn’t hesitate to hurt one of them for his own purposes.

2 Klaus: Because He Was The Most Powerful Villain

The characters of The Vampire Diaries had to put up with a lot of dangerous enemies before Klaus arrived in Mystic Falls and long after he left, but to be honest, none of them ever really measured up to Klaus’ power and capabilities.

As far as vampire villains go especially, there is no one who could even hold a candle to the kind of threat that Klaus posed.

1 Damon: Because He Wasn’t Always A Villain

Despite actually being a part of the Mystic Falls gang, Damon was arguably one of their biggest threats by virtue of that fact alone.

Damon could do awful things, but he wasn’t always awful, and it was hard to know what version of Damon was coming to the party until he started maiming or killing people. He was closer to the core group than any other villainous figure, so he was truly their most dangerous vampire adversary.
