For six seasons of The Vampire Diaries’ eight-season run, Elena Gilbert was the heroine of the series. And for the most part, she lived up to that title. However, she wasn’t always a perfect protagonist, and there were moments throughout her character arc where she seemed downright villainous.

As someone who began the story as a human doppelganger who was an absolute magnet for all other supernatural beings, Elena could have been helpless, but she did what she could with the power that she had in order to save the people she loved. But, she sometimes did things that were pretty horrific too.

10 Was The Hero: Trying To Save Stefan From Klaus

When it looked like Damon had no hope of survival after being on the receiving end of a supposedly incurable werewolf bite, Klaus revealed that his blood was actually the cure. In exchange for Damon’s life, Stefan agreed to leave town with Klaus, and he really went off the deep end.

But, Elena wasn’t ready to give up on him, even when she realized he’d done terrible things, and she went chasing after the both of them, risking her life trying to save Stefan.

9 Was The Villain: Attacking Liz Forbes

Unsurprisingly, a lot of Elena’s ugliest moments came when she flipped her humanity switch and really cut loose, embracing the worst parts of herself without a second thought.

Despite the fact that her brother had just died, humanity-free Elena decided that this was the perfect time to party, but local law enforcement disagreed. And, when Liz Forbes tried to shut things down, instead of doing as the sheriff asked, Elena attacked her.

8 Was The Hero: Trying To Save Caroline From Alaric

Oftentimes, when Elena goes off on her own trying to solve a dangerous problem, the problem gets worse. However, when Esther turned Alaric into an Original Vampire Hunter and he was holding Caroline hostage at Mystic Falls High, he demanded that Elena come to him.

She didn’t know what was happening or what she was walking into, but when she knew that Caroline’s life was at stake, she didn’t hesitate to risk her own in the small hope that she could help her friend.

7 Was The Villain: Attacking Caroline

Elena was an absolute nightmare when she turned her humanity off, and one person that she really seemed to have it out for was Caroline.

She bullied Caroline at their cheer competition, she stole Caroline’s prom dress, and when Caroline actually squared up with Elena after she attacked Caroline’s mom, it looked like Elena might literally murder one of her best friends. It was really over the top, even for a vampire who had flipped the switch.

6 Was The Hero: Staying Trapped In Sleep

Throughout the course of The Vampire Diaries, Elena has been at the center of many revenge plots. But one of the worst was Kai’s sleeping beauty curse, which essentially meant that so long as Bonnie was alive, Elena would be trapped in slumber.

This curse meant that Elena wouldn’t be able to live her own life until Bonnie was gone, therefore she would lose out on her own human life and never be able to see her mortal friends or loved ones again, most likely. But she did it because she couldn’t hurt Bonnie.

5 Was The Villain: Attacking Bonnie

In most cases, Bonnie and Elena were true blue besties who would do absolutely anything for one another. But once again, Elena without her humanity is pretty much the exact opposite of the real Elena, and after acting a fool at prom, Elena decided to top things off by attacking Bonnie.

That was obviously a huge mistake, as Bonnie immediately used her witchy powers to subdue and wound Elena, but it was still an ugly moment for Elena as well.

4 Was The Hero: Not Running From Klaus’ Sacrifice

The prospect of dying in a ritual sacrifice would be terrifying for anyone, let alone someone who had lived as short a life as Elena had by that point.

However, when she knew how big of a threat Klaus was and what he might do to her friends and family if she disobeyed him or tried to run, she decided to willingly sacrifice herself in order to protect as many people as possible.

3 Was The Villain: Killing The Waitress

Elena lost pretty much her entire family in the first few seasons of The Vampire Diaries, but when Jeremy was killed on their mission to find the cure, she finally snapped. She turned off her humanity and was insistent about keeping it off.

Understandably, Damon and Stefan knew this was no way to solve her problems, and they started working on getting the normal Elena back. But she saw right through it, and killed a completely innocent waitress just to show them how serious she was about staying inhuman.

2 Was The Hero: Dying For Matt

Elena has always been a character who is ready to sacrifice herself for the good of those that she loves, but in almost every instance, someone comes to her rescue before she actually has to do the sacrificing.

But, when she was suddenly faced with the choice of saving herself or saving Matt, she insisted that Stefan save Matt, and she was fully expecting to die when she made that choice.

1 Was The Villain: Conspiring To Kill Kol

While Elena wasn’t the one to actually kill Kol, this plan was entirely her idea, and it was an absolutely horrifying plan. In order to make Jeremy’s Hunter’s Mark grow, he needed to kill vampires, but killing an Original would kill their entire sire line.

So, Elena thought that essentially committing mass vampire genocide and killing hundreds if not thousands of vampires indiscriminately in one instant was the best option.
