On The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce share more than just looks: the two are also members of the Petrova family. Season 1 promises a connection between Katherine Pierce, aka “Katerina Petrova,” Elena’s biological mother Isobel Flemming, and Elena, but it takes a while for the series to deliver. Isobel drops a hint when she tells Elena Katherine looked her up after she turned out of biological curiosity. When Katherine arrives in Mystic Falls during season 2, she drops another bombshell: she and Elena are Petrova doppelgangers, but even Katherine doesn’t fully grasp what this means and how it relates to her ancestors’ bloodline.

During his search for an answer as to why Elena and Katherine look-alike, Stefan learns Elena is adopted. Still, neither he nor Damon understands the link between the woman they used to love and the woman they currently love. Being a descendant is one thing, but being exact replicas of one another adds another layer to the mysterious connection between Elena and Katherine. When Elena, Alaric, and Damon go to Duke to look through Isobel’s research in season 2’s “Bad Moon Rising,” Isobel’s research assistant defines a doppelganger as a “living, breathing double of oneself.” Still, all of these puzzle pieces didn’t quite fit together in a way that makes sense.

It’s Katherine who finally reveals how she and Elena are connected during season 2’s “Katerina.” Before meeting Klaus Mikaelson and becoming a vampire, Katherine gives birth to a daughter in 149o. Katherine’s father gives the baby away. Presumably, this child grows up and keeps the Petrova bloodline going after Klaus murders Katherine’s family in 1492. This solves the mystery of Katherine and Elena’s ancestral connection, but not what a Petrova doppelganger is and why Klaus needs one so badly.

Katherine’s explanation about the purpose of the doppelganger isn’t entirely incorrect. The doppelganger blood of her and Elena’s ancestor Tatia is the binding agent Esther uses to turn her children into vampires and to suppress Klaus’ werewolf side, but doppelgangers serve a much larger purpose. They are the magical byproduct of Qetsiyah and Silas’ immortality spell. Doppelgangers are Silas’ and Amara’s shadow selves who die in their place – nature’s way to restore balance. Tatia is the first in Amara’s line and Elena the last.

After four seasons, it seems the Katherine-Elena-doppelganger connection is finally resolved, but then the mysterious beauty Nadia shows up in Mystic Falls during season 5. Nadia exposes herself as Katherine’s long-lost daughter. She reveals she’s been searching for her mother for 500 years. She had herself turned into a vampire, so she could stay young and strong long enough to find the woman who she believes abandoned her.

This raises a question the show never answers: did Nadia give birth before becoming a vampire? Would she sacrifice a relationship with her child to chase down Katherine, making her an immortal hypocrite? Maybe history repeats itself, and someone takes Nadia’s child from her further fueling her obsession. Nadia is also immortal, so it’s possible she does her due diligence as a loving parent and then spends centuries trying to resolve her mommy issues. There isn’t much to Nadia’s backstory, so the mystery involving the missing Petrova descendent remains unsolved. There must be one. Otherwise, the connection between Elena and Katherine doesn’t exist.
