A new Witcher game is coming out but not in the way you think. Spokko, a mobile developer under CD PROJEKT Red, recently teased an AR-style game for The Witcher series called, The Witcher: Monster Slayer. It looks to operate similarly to Pokémon GO in that the world is your map, but instead of encountering Pokémon, you’ll find monsters from a Witcher’s bestiary roaming the world. You won’t be capturing them, though, as the game is all about slaying the monsters you encounter. It’ll be a fun new way to enjoy a walk in the park for fans of The Witcher.

Information about the game has only just been released, but so far, it looks like a cross between a more traditional RPG and The Witcher were encountering a monster means a battle and there are quests to be had. From trailer footage, we can see the assets come from The Witcher 3. Enemies like trolls, griffins and the popular leshen are all present, though there will undoubtedly be other appearances from the books or even the first game as time goes on.

This AR game features a story where players are at the center. Players take on the role of a Witcher in their own tale, although it hasn’t been revealed if you’ll get to customize your character like Pokémon GO’s trainers. However, there are equipment and items, as the gameplay trailer shows a merchant handing the player a potion in AR, and screenshots have shown off a variety of swords.

In The Witcher timeline, the game takes place long before Geralt of Rivia’s saga, likely so as not to be bogged down with the series’ lore. In Geralt’s timeline, there are very few Witchers left and the secrets to create more were lost, but decades before then, many schools were dedicated to training them.

Like Pokémon GO, the map is based on your real-world area with random encounters and points of interest. Instead of a simple flat, colored map, The Witcher: Monster Slayer renders a medieval-style one reminiscent of Runescape. When zoomed out, it shows a wider area with markers for encounters and places — though not all encounters are monsters. Like any RPG, there are quest givers and NPCs in need, which will likely function similarly to Pokémon GO’s tasks and field research, but more interactive as they can be in AR too.

Monster encounters will be the core of the game and will be encountered anywhere at varying difficulties. On top of this, the whole tracking monsters down feature from The Witcher 3 will be part of finding monsters or learning more about them so you can fight them better. When you do find a monster, you can enter combat with a simple tap. You’ll be able to attack, defend, use Witcher potions, bombs and even signs to take down your prey, leading to a more intense battle than just throwing Pokéballs. Once a beast is defeated, you’ll be able to take trophies and start a collection.

It certainly looks like The Witcher shows no signs of slowing down some five years after the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There’s no release date other than ‘coming soon,’ but so far The Witcher: Monster Slayer looks like a promising AR-RPG.
