The X-Men’s Jean Grey finally has a new costume… but it happens to be an old costume, a nostalgic throwback to her time with X-Factor. Jean Grey has always counted herself as something of a fashionista, the X-Men equivalent of the Avengers’ Wasp (who runs her own fashion line). When Xavier finally gave the original five X-Men permission to stop wearing their dour training uniforms, it was Jean Grey who redesigned their outfits.
When Jonathan Hickman relaunched the X-Men back in 2019, he made the surprising decision to have Jean go back to that old look – a very ’60s-style costume that’s more like a dress, complete with miniskirt. The costume appears to have been adopted out of a sense of nostalgia, which feels strangely out-of-character for someone like Jean Grey, who has reinvented herself so many times. Still, at least she wasn’t dressing up as the Phoenix again, having finally cut off her ties with the Phoenix Force in the Phoenix: Resurrection miniseries.
Now it seems Jean is finally getting a new costume – by switching to an outfit she wore during her time with X-Factor. Newsarama has released a preview of January 27’s X-Men #17, showing three of the X-Men – Cyclops, Jean, and Storm – headed into space to help the Shi’ar. It features art by controversial artist Brett Booth and shows that Cyclops and Jean Grey are both wearing X-Factor costumes.
In general, the X-Men have been taking a more flexible approach with costumes of late, treating them as the mutant equivalent of everyday clothes; consequently, some of the X-Men have swapped between different outfits with amusing regularity. But Cyclops and Jean Grey have tended to stick with just the one look, suggesting there’s a story reason for this costume change. It’s possible this reflects a major change that appears to be taking place on Krakoa, with Cyclops and Jean reforming the X-Men against Charles Xavier’s wishes. Note both these outfits are dominated by a prominent “X” shape.
Oddly enough, there’s actually a straightforward sense of narrative progression to this “new” costume Jean is wearing. Technically Jean was replaced by the Phoenix Force for several years, and this X-Factor look was the first one Jean herself wore after the green dress/miniskirt number. That said, Jean did wear a number of different versions of this costume in various color schemes – most famously green and red. It will be interesting to see the colored pages of X-Men #17, revealing just what her new/old X-Men costume looks like.
