Doofus Rick is unlike any other Rick on Rick and Morty, and a fan theory suggests he’s the original Rick to Evil Morty. Centered around the two titular characters, Rick and Morty has gained a strong following through three seasons thanks to the humor and creativity it constantly has. One of the main reasons how the series has continued to keep introducing fresh ideas is through the infinite number of universes that it visits (also Szechuan Sauce).

Even though there are endless amounts of universes, Rick and Morty is based around one particular set of the characters from the C-137 reality. But, the multiverse gives the series unlimited access to variations of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith. Throughout the series, there have been several different versions of them who have repeatedly popped up. One that shows just how extreme the paradigm between the different reality characters can be is Doofus Rick.

Hailing from Dimension J19 Zeta 7, Doofus Rick is the least liked of all the Ricks in the multiverse. One of the primary reasons for this is because Doofus Rick does not act like the other Ricks. Instead of being meanspirited and selfish, Doofus Rick is kind and caring. But, his existence has also begged the question by Rick and Morty viewers of who his original Morty is. Well, one theory – as discussed in the Screen Rant video featured at the top of this post – suggests that he is the original Rick for Evil Morty.

In Rick and Morty, it has been hinted that there is an entire spectrum of Mortys and Ricks throughout the multiverse. The tease came in the episode “Close Rick-counters of The Rick Kind” as the series’ main Rick mentions that he is the Rick-est Rick, while C-137 Morty is the Morty-est Morty. If this is true, then there would be a reality where the Morty-est Rick and Rick-est Morty exist. This is where the theory comes into play, as Doofus Rick acts more like Morty than he does Rick, while Evil Morty acts more like Rick than he does Morty. And, if the Morty-est Morty and Rick-est Rick come from the same reality, then the Rick-est Morty and Morty-est Rick may just as well.

While we’ve seen Evil Morty have his own Evil Rick, there is a workaround to still make this work. Doofus Rick says he never had kids and as a result never had a Morty either, but Rick and Morty has also shown technology that can erase memories. This would mean that Evil Morty wiped Doofus Rick’s mind before sending him away, and then Evil Morty replaced him with Evil Rick. With Rick and Morty season 4 on the way, maybe future episodes of the show will reveal that this theory is accurate.
