While promoting Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland jokes about how seriously Marvel takes spoiler leakage, comparing himself to a member of the Suicide Squad. Holland has been playing Peter Parker since 2016 when this version of Spider-Man first hit screens in Captain America: Civil War. Holland is set to appear as Peter Parker once again in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which picks up right after Far From Home with Spider-Man’s identity reveal.
This movie brings together a plethora of stars from new and old Marvel movies, including Jamie Foxx (Electro), Alfred Molina (Doc Ock), and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), as well as a collection of other familiar faces from across the MCU. This highly anticipated film has fans brimming over with excitement, so much so that they overwhelmed ticket websites during their presale release, causing various sites to crash. This level of enthusiasm is no surprise after Spider-Man: No Way Home’s first trailer garnered over 355 million views within its first 24 hours.
While promoting Spider-Man: No Way Home on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Tom Holland and his co-stars talked about their experiences on set. They also spoke to some young Spider-Man fans, answering Marvel-related questions. One confident fan even asks Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds) to spoil the ending of the new movie. Holland and Batalon then joke back and forth about the repercussions they might face for spilling Marvel secrets:
Holland: They would probably kill us.Batalon: Yeah, I think they absolutely have, like, our tracking numbers on us.Holland: They put a chip in the back on the first one.Batalon: Yeah, on the back of our heads. And if you can- it’s remote controlled and they blow your head up. So that’s essentially what’s going to happen.Holland: We’re like the real-life Suicide Squad.
Since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland has garnered a reputation for accidentally divulging confidential Marvel movie information, becoming a running joke between fans and co-stars alike. The famously loose-lipped actor has even had scripts for movies that he was acting in kept from him, including Infinity War and Endgame. However, Holland reportedly knows all the details for this upcoming Spider-Man movie, claiming that he now knows how to not spoil anything. Despite this, it’s safe to say that throughout Holland’s spoiler-ridden past, he’s likely become very familiar with the consequences of giving out Marvel movie secrets.
While the above quote is obviously a joke, Marvel does have an extensive record of going above and beyond to keep all aspects of their productions a secret. This goes as far as handing out fake scripts — or no scripts at all — to their actors. Actors were made to film scenes without any context or that were never intended to go in the movie at all. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo claim this is beneficial for the actors (so no plot secrets are mistakenly revealed) and for fans (so they don’t see spoilers before the film’s release). While this is true, it is detrimental to the final product, as those involved never get to give their best performance, taking away from the quality of the film. Tom Holland was let in on all relevant information before filming Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it appears to be paying off, with early reactions giving the film overwhelmingly positive reviews.
