There IS a Pokemon Afterlife But They Can Also Become Force Ghosts!

F still know very little about the Pokemon afterlife, but death has long been a major factor in the Pokemon universe throughout the movies and the games almost ritualistically. Kanto Region’s Lavender Town even has a massive seven-floor Pokemon graveyard called Pokemon Tower that players can explore in the Gen 1 games. In this town, players got their first look into the mysterious afterlife of the franchise.

There was a Cubone hat lost its mother Marowak to Team Rocket. The Marowak returned from the afterlife as a vengeful spirit that wreaked havoc in the Pokemon Tower. The player would have to calm the spirit by defeating it in battle before it could successfully pass on into the afterlife. The ghastly Marowak could actually speak with humans, telling them to “Be gone…” any time they neared it. This was the first piece of evidence that Pokemon could actually “return from the dead” in a sense — but more importantly, it also proved that Pokemon spirits could interact and even do battle with Pokemon that were still living.

The fact that Stoutland was able to come back from the dead in the anime fits with the supporting evidence from the early games. What makes his resurrection different is that he had already ascended into the afterlife and made the decision to come back. In comparison to Marowak, Stoutland actually went to Pokemon’s version of Heaven and returned, whereas Marowak became a vengeful ghost and wasn’t able to reach Pokemon Heaven until it was defeated and calmed. This detail shows that a Pokemon’s death also affects its experience in the afterlife. Marokwak carried the anguish and pain from its horrific death with it to the afterlife while Stoutland passed away from old age. This was ultimately the separating factor in the way these two Pokemon rose from their graves.

Stoutland’s death was undoubtedly one of the saddest moments in the history of the Pokemon, anime but he would make one last appearance before deciding to return to the mysterious afterlife. After Ash’s Litten evolved into Torracat, the fire Pokemon was having some trouble learning Fire Blast when it got an assist from an old friend. Stoutland returned from the dead and was able to successfully teach Torracat how to use Fire Blast in an emotionally warming moment.

It’s easy to compare the idea of bringing ghosts back from the grave to guide and mentor the heroes to the Force Ghosts in Star Wars. Star Wars’ afterlife is just as mysterious as Pokemon’s. Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and even Darth Vader himself were all able to return to the world of the living as Force Ghosts to try and guide the lives of their former students. Like their Pokemon counterparts, the Jedi apparitions were able to speak with their students and friends, giving them words of wisdom while sharing lost knowledge that they took with them to the afterlife. Stoutland was a Pokemon Force Ghost of sorts, able to give quite the Jedi impersonation through his teaching of Torracat.

By returning from the grave to guide his best friend, Stoutland showed that there is in fact an afterlife in the Pokemon world. There is still more to be explored about the Pokemon universe and the way that its afterlife works, but Stoutland uncovered precious information that was able to give fans a glimpse into the other side.
