Killer reptiles have always been a favorite of the creature feature. 2019’s Crawl is the newest entry into the ever popular “deadly alligator/crocodile eats some people” genre, but are they the deadliest reptiles around?

There are a lot of gators, snakes, and other assorted reptiles wreaking havoc in Hollywood. No turtles though. Where are all the turtle horror movies? Well, anyway, we tally up the kill counts of some of film’s most prolific scaly fiends.

10 Rogue (2007)

Top 10 Deadliest Movie Reptiles Of All Time

A bunch of tourists on a crocodile-watching boat ride in the middle of Australia’s Northern Territory. What could possibly go wrong? Apparently, a lot. It starts when their guide, wildlife researcher Kate Ryan (Rahda Mitchell) spots a distant flare. Deciding to investigate whether or not a group needs rescuing, she and the rest of the group unwittingly end up beached on a small island in the middle of a crocodile’s territory. And the tide is coming in.

The movie is based on the true story of a giant male saltwater crocodile named Sweetheart that attacked boats in the 1970s. However, in real life, Sweetheart was never responsible for attacking a human. The croc in Rogue devours a total of four tourists plus, most upsetting, a dog.

9 Black Water (2007)

Another 2007 horror film set in Australia about a killer crocodile. Weird coincidence. Black Water is a smaller film starring Diana Glenn and Maeve Dermody about a dangerous reptile prowling the Australian mangrove swamps. The mangroves are a unique and claustrophobic setting for this kind of movie, with the victims all trapped in the trees. The small cast gives each of the three deaths a powerful punch. The croc leaves only a single, solitary survivor.

8 Anaconda (1997)

Top 10 Deadliest Movie Reptiles Of All Time

A classic creature camp-fest starring such varied talent as Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, and Jon Voight as the villainous Paul Serone. Terrie Flores (Lopez) and her film crew are traveling into the Amazon rain forest to track down and document a lost tribe. They stumble across Serone, who offers to guide them, though his strange behavior quickly makes it clear he’s after something else.

That something else is a massive green anaconda whose CGI has seen better days. However, that doesn’t stop it from crushing five of the cast to death, including Serone himself. Then at the end of their ordeal, the remaining crew actually do find the tribe they were looking for and continue making their documentary. Any sacrifice for art, we guess.

7 Crawl (2019)

Top 10 Deadliest Movie Reptiles Of All Time

The alligators in Crawl have a pretty solid kill count, and earned it a place on the list. As a Category 5 hurricane approaches Florida, Haley Keller ignores an evacuation order to make sure her father Dave is okay. She finds him at their old family home in Coral Lake, trapped in the crawl space under the house by the aforementioned hungry gators. Protected at first by the large pipes under the house that block the gators’ way, the flooding from the hurricane threatens to drown them if they can’t find a way out.

The alligators down a total of five unfortunate people caught in the flood. But hey, at least the dog makes it out of this one!

6 Lake Placid (1999)

Top 10 Deadliest Movie Reptiles Of All Time

The Lake Placid franchise shows the havoc caused in the fictional town of Black Lake, Maine by a line of bloodthirsty saltwater crocodiles that somehow found there way into this freshwater lake. The movie stars Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda investigating the strange events surrounds the lake. Eventually they uncover that an elderly hermit, Delores Bickerman, has been feeding the crocodile for years, causing it to grow to massive size.

The crocs don’t rack up too high of a kill count in the first entry (unless you count the unfortunate blindfolded cows) but Lake Placid has a total of five sequels. The most recent, Lake Placid: Legacy just came out in 2018 and is meant to be a standalone entry to the franchise. The antics of the dangerous family of reptiles only get more absurd and destructive as the series goes on.

5 Komodo (1999)

Top 10 Deadliest Movie Reptiles Of All Time

Here’s the premise for this campy late 90s horror. A truck driver hired to transport some exotic animals smells something foul. He finds a crate of reptile eggs and decides they’re rotten. So of course he just throws them into a swamp and drives away. Real professional. This allows a whole clutch of Komodo dragons to grow up and terrorize a North Carolina town. The dragons slaughter the entire family of a young boy named Patrick (Kevin Zegers) early on. They then kill at least five other people over the course of the movie. The special effects might be less than stellar, but it gets points for not being just another creature feature about crocodiles.

4 Alligator (1980)

Top 10 Deadliest Movie Reptiles Of All Time

Alligator is a take on the classic “baby alligator flushed down the toilet” urban legend. This particular alligator gorged itself on the discarded bodies of lab animals being used to test growth formula. This not only caused it to grow to massive size, but also sped up its metabolism. In other words it’s very big and very hungry. The gator is left to devour sewer workers in peace until the number of severed body parts grows too high to ignore. A police officer (Robert Forster) is brought in to investigate along with a reptile expert (Robin Riker) who happens to be the very girl who flushed the beast in the first place.

The movie features a colorful cast of characters: an obnoxious tabloid reporter, a shady business tycoon, even a big-game hunter. All excellent fodder for a hungry alligator. The movie racks up a healthy seven on screen kills. Not to mention all the poor sanitation men killed before anyone took notice.

3 The Lost World (1997)

Top 10 Deadliest Movie Reptiles Of All Time

Listen. Dinosaurs definitely count as reptiles. And while the first movie is more of an adventure film, The Lost World really amps up the carnage the dinos cause. Specifically, when the Tyrannosaurus rex makes its way to San Diego. It and some other dinosaurs kill some members of the team sent by genetics company InGen while still on the island. Then while being transported, the T. rex kills all of the ship’s crew. The ship crashes into the dock and a guard accidentally releases the T. rex, which then goes on a rampage through the city. There’s no exact death count for this creature’s reign of terror, but it’s no small number.

2 Primeval (2007)

Top 10 Deadliest Movie Reptiles Of All Time

2007 was a really good year for movies about giant killer crocodiles. Breaking the pattern, this one doesn’t take place in Australia. Instead, it’s based on a real man-eating crocodile named Gustave from Burundi. The main characters are, again, reporters going to document the murderous reptile after the killing of an anthropologist.

Primeval is unfortunately a messy movie. It spent more time on the local warlord (known as “Little Gustave”) and unspecified civil war than it does the big croc. However, since the real life Gustave is rumored to have killed hundreds of people, his statistics make him the crocodilian to beat.

1 Godzilla (various)

Far and away the most deadly movie reptile is none other than the King of the Monsters himself. With a whopping 35 film credits to his name, Godzilla has stomped and burned his way to number one. It’s impossible to estimate this behemoth’s kill count. However, he has leveled a number of cities in his day. You can’t go around knocking down buildings without racking up a few human causalities. Tokyo alone has been attacked 13 times. Other visits on his world tour include New York City, Paris, Hong Kong, and Honolulu. There’s really no way to top that kind of widespread destruction.
