The Netflix series On My Block follows a group of friends trying to navigate the gang violence of their hometown as they begin high school. Although they are surrounded by violence the show doesn’t focus on it as much and instead focuses on character building Monse, Cesar, Ruby, and Jamal as high schoolers who happen to be in this environment.

The coming-of-age show has a fantastic balance of comedy and drama that keeps its audience on edge with earned drama and shocking cliffhangers. Let’s revisit the top-rated episodes of this series so far!

10 Chapter Seventeen (S2 E7) – 8.3

Ruby’s mom becomes frustrated as they plan her son Mario’s baby shower with the young pregnant woman, Amber, he brought home from school.

Ruby takes control as usual and begins to plan every little detail of the party and becomes stressed when nothing goes the way he planned. Amber goes into labor at the party with a shocking conclusion.

9 Chapter Twenty (S2 E10) – 8.4

Monse decides that she’s going to leave for another school and probably won’t see the group anymore. They have an argument about it as Monse says she’s serious this time, but none of the guys believe her.

It’s a darkly humorous moment as the episode ends with a cliffhanger of the four kids being kidnapped. This is quickly resolved at the beginning of Season 3, but On My Block is already well-known for its shocking cliffhangers.

Ruby learns that his family is having money issues and he believes it’s because of his insanely high hospital bills after the end of Season 1.

He comes up with a scheme to make money as him and Jamal go to the pool to sell chicken sandwiches. Jamal also finally meets his supposed stalker and still wonders if she’s a spy for the rival gang in town, but becomes close with her anyway.

7 Chapter Twenty-Four (S3 E4) – 8.5

The group is still searching for Lil’ Ricky and trying to come up with ideas on where they can look next by narrowing down their list of suspects. Cesar and Monse attempt to go on a real date, which is something they haven’t successfully done yet throughout the show. Ruby begins to have feelings for Jasmine.

He tries to ignore and repress them, but eventually, they seep through and he has to confront them. Things become serious with Jamal and his stalker as they build a real relationship.

6 Chapter Twenty-Six (S3 E6) – 8.5

Jamal has an idea who Lil’ Ricky is pretending to be and so the friends sneak onto a music video set to find out the truth. It’s a light-hearted episode that sees them having fun and Jamal having to act like a pretentious teen star.

Ruby tries to confront his feelings for Jasmine after they kiss on the set and more is revealed about where they can find Lil’ Ricky.

5 Chapter Fourteen (S2 E4) – 8.6

This episode has a fantastic balance of fun, drama, and grief as the group gets ready for the Valentine’s Day dance. Cesar is now living with Jamal and while Jamal loves him like a brother Cesar is already going crazy.

Jasmine tries to help Ruby find a date to the dance, but the two end up going together in an attempt to win the dance competition. Their joyous night is cut short when the same song beings to play that was playing at Olivia’s quinceañera and Jasmine takes Ruby outside to comfort him.

4 Chapter Twenty-Five (S3 E5) – 8.7

Ruby becomes disillusioned as Cuchillos threatens him and the daunting task of finding Lil’ Ricky begins to get to him and Jasmine has to try to calm him down after he loses his cool.

Monse deals with a crisis with her newly found mother and the group tries to support her throughout the difficult time.

3 Chapter Twenty-Seven (S3 E7) – 8.8

Monse, Cesar, Jamal, and Ruby try to put together a plan so they don’t have to worry about Cuchillos anymore. They team up with Cesar’s older brother, Oscar, to put the plan into motion and try to keep Jasmine from finding out to keep her safe.

It’s a tense episode with twists and turns throughout until the end and puts a strain on the close friends and Cesar’s brother.

2 Chapter Twenty-Eight (S3 E8) – 8.9

The finale to the third season jumps forward in time to see Monse, Cesar, Jamal, Ruby, Jasmine, and Oscar in the future after their journey finding Lil’ Ricky is done.

It could end up being a fitting end to their story, as they all drift apart but will still have fond memories as a tight-knit group, or the show could continue, with Season 4 as is planned, because it was left open-ended.

1 Chapter Ten (S1 E10) – 9.0

The finale to the first season left the audience with a big cliffhanger. Cesar’s gang connection brings danger to the tight-knit group of friends. Over the second half of the first season, Ruby has been determined to give Olivia a perfect quinceañera and the day is finally here.

Everything is going perfectly, too perfectly, as a kid from a rival gang shows up and attempts to shoot Cesar. The intense episode still holds up on multiple viewings even after knowing the result of the shooting.
