2020 has proven so far to be a very exciting year for historical role-playing games. Many successful franchises have announced sequels to their prized hits, and plenty of newcomers are entering the scene.

For this list, only strict historical RPGs were looked at, so that means no games that have some form of fantasy or magic elements will be here. Furthermore, games were looked at from all time periods from the Dark Ages to the Prohibition Era. So with that being said, let’s jump right into it!

5. Imperiums: Greek Wars

Top 5 Historical RPGs Slated to Release in 2020

Imperiums: Greek Wars is being developed by Kube Games and impressively, this will be their first game. We don’t have much games on the market that focus solely on the Greek World, save for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Imperiums: Greek Wars is set in 359 BC right when Philip II of Macedon assumes the throne. Furthermore, you can play from a selection of 30 nations, including Sparta, Athens, and the Achaemenid Empire. The developers have stated there will be a mythological touch, however, it seems as though it will be a system viewed through the gaze of the citizens of Greece in this time period.

One thing we haven’t really seen in this genre that will be present in Imperiums is the ability to build your nation/society in a randomized world. Imperiums: Greek Wars is scheduled to release sometime in Spring 2020, but it looks like that date will be pushed back seeing as we are now in the middle of May.
