Transformers: War For Cybertron is introducing the Golden Disk, the mysterious key to the Beast Wars saga, in the final chapter of the sprawling trilogy. Fans have had plenty of Transformers references to chew on in War For Cybertron, which has touched on virtually every iteration of the Transformers franchise in one form or another in the first two chapters, the Cybertron-set Transformers: Siege and the space-faring Transformers: Earthrise.

Yet no reference is quite as enticing to Transformers fans as the Golden Disk. During Earthrise’s penultimate episode, Megatron is visited by his future self, Galvatron, who pleads with the Decepticon leader to alter his future so he never becomes a slave to Unicron, the massive, planet-sized Transformer. Galvatron is pulled back to his own time before he can fully lay out his plan, but he does tell Megatron he needs the Golden Disk to change his fate.

The Golden Disk was introduced in the Beast Wars animated series. The disk had its origins on Earth; it’s based on a real world space artifact launched with the Voyager space probe in the 1980s. In the world of Transformers, however, Megatron encoded a message on the Golden Disk after having awakened on Earth in 1984 to restart the Great War between the Autobots and Decepticons. The message was a failsafe measure in case Megatron lost the war which, by the time of Beast Wars, he had. Megatron’s message was clear: kill the dormant Optimus Prime in the Ark before he and the Autobots awaken in 1984, and the Decepticons will win the war.

The Golden Disk fell into the hands of a rogue Predacon who dubbed himself the new Megatron, intent on overthrowing the Maximals – the Autobots’ descendants – who controlled a peaceful Cybertron. The Maximal Dinobot would sacrifice himself to destroy the disk, but the new Megatron would ultimately decide to heed the words of his namesake, and Beast Wars went from a mysterious, small-scale squabble to a sprawling time war with massive ramifications for the entirety of Cybertronian history.

It’s still unclear how the Golden Disk will figure into Kingdom, the final chapter of Transformers: War For Cybertron. The final moments of Earthrise suggest that the Beast Wars have already begun on Earth, and that a confrontation between the Autobots and Decepticons and their descendants is imminent. The notion that Megatron would use the Golden Disk to alter his personal history is an intriguing new wrinkle in the franchise. Whatever future awaits Transformers: War For Cybertron, the Golden Disk figures to play a crucial role in the trilogy’s final act.
