Five’s time travel abilities are among the most significant powers in The Umbrella Academy, but how precise are they? Inspired by the popular comics by Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy stars a handful of super-powered heroes who were trained in the use of their powers by Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Unfortunately, Sir Reginald was far from an ideal father-figure to the children he took on, and as a result, his education left a lot to be desired.

The character of Five is easily the most intriguing of all the Hargreeves siblings. His powers are still relatively undefined, in large part because he rebelled against Sir Reginald when he was just a child and took an unpredictable jump into the future — only to arrive in a post-apocalypse timeline. Five was stranded there, and only really began to learn to understand his power to manipulate the spacetime continuum when he was picked up by the Commission. But, as The Umbrella Academy season 2 revealed, he’s still figuring out how to handle his superhuman abilities.

In order to truly understand Five’s powers, one had to understand the nature of the universe itself. In 1908, German mathematician Hermann Minkowski suggested space and time should be seen as inextricably linked. “Space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality,” he wrote. Albert Einstein built upon this as part of his Theory of Relativity, and modern science suggests they were right. Five, for his part, appears to be able to manipulate the spacetime continuum at will, making him easily one of the most powerful of the Hargreeves family.

Teleportation

Five considers himself the world’s most dangerous assassin, and in large part that’s because he’s learned to use his power to teleport at will. He appears to have mastered this aspect of his power, jumping through space with little conscious thought, but it is nonetheless draining; despite Five’s claims that he could “do this all day” during his fight with his past self in The Umbrella Academy season 2, the experience of so many jumps was palpably exhausting. It’s interesting to note that Five’s power appears to allow him to avoid obstacles, because — unlike many comic book teleporters — he shows no fear of accidentally arriving in the middle of another object.

Time Travel

According to Minkowski and Einstein, time and space are linked; thus, it’s entirely logical that a being who can travel through space at will can also jump through time. In fact, Five appears to be able to open wormholes at will, essentially opening bridges that link one point in spacetime to another. This is a remarkable feat, but unfortunately, these wormholes are dangerously unstable. Five has to mentally prepare sophisticated calculations to allow him to control these wormholes, but even the smallest error can prove catastrophic. One such error led Five to regress to the age of a child when he first attempted to reunite with his family in The Umbrella Academy season 1, while another scattered the Hargreeves siblings across time in The Umbrella Academy season 2, leading to a crisis around the JFK assassination. Larger mistakes have the potential to be even worse; in theory, wormholes could be accompanied by high radiation and exotic matter.

The Umbrella Academy season 2 suggested Five may well have an even greater degree of control over spacetime. At one point in the season 2 finale, he literally reversed the flow of time around himself in order to defeat the Handler. This is a particularly impressive feat, and it suggests Five hasn’t even begun to scratch the surface yet when it comes to exploring his natural abilities.
