Fionn Mac Cumhaill is the second boss of the Shinagawa Netherworld. Based on the mythical Irish hero of the same name, he is a hunter of Demons, and you just so happen to cross his path.

Wielding the legendary Mac an Luin, Fionn Mac Cumhaill is a potent physical force with enough magical abilities to keep you on your toes. As with all bosses in Shin Megami Tensei 5, if you don’t go into the fight prepared, you will likely suffer a crushing defeat.

Fionn Mac Cumhaill Potentials, Attacks, and Resistances

Potentials

Fionn Mac Cumhaill is primarily a physical brawler, and this is represented by his shockingly high +5 Potential with Physical attacks. This is a serious boost to his already-impressive damage output.

Not only that, however, Fionn Mac Cumhaill is a fairly potent caster, with a +3 to Ice magic and +4 to Fire magic. He is no pushover on the offence.

Attacks

When it comes to attacks, Fionn Mac Cumhaill has four standard attacks, one buff, and an attack he will only use during his Magatsuhi, Omagtoki: Critical.

Resistances

Fionn Mac Cumhaill comes with complete immunity to Light and Fire damage. This is especially notable since both those elements have been useful in the zones leading up to his boss fight. His only weakness is Lightning and you will want to focus on this heavilyy during the fight.

Recommended Party Setup

Shin Megami Tensei 5 How To Defeat Fionn Mac Cumhaill

Fionn Mac Cumhaill is a dangerous opponent who can turn the tide of the battle very quickly with his devastating physical attacks. You don’t want to go into this battle without a potent mix of support, damage, and preparation.

Nahobino

Nahobino is, as ever, the most important piece on the board. If he dies, it’s game over. Thankfully, Nahobino is well suited to the fight due to his access to Ruinous Thunder or Zionga. Sakanagi can also do wonders in this fight if your Nahobino has gone Strength-heavy.

Support magic will also go a long way here, so consider Essence fusing Sukunda and Diarama onto him. Sukunda will cut into Fionn Mac Cumhaill’s Accuracy, making it much harder for him to deal damage. Diarama is perfect for healing allies since Fionn Mac Cumhaill tends to deal single-target damage.

Remember to use items too. This fight can last quite a while, so throwing out Chakra Drops can help. Additionally, things like Fire and Physical Dampers can help.

Cironnup

Cirronup is easily the best support piece you can have at this point in the game. Not only is he resistant to both Fire and Ice, keeping him safe from Fionn Mac Cumhaill’s magical onslaught, but he also has some powerful abilities that make this fight much easier.

Cautious Cheer +4 is the star of the show, buffing your entire party’s Defence, Accuracy, and Evasion. This drastically increases your party’s survivability. The only drawback is its cost, which is pretty high. You could also use Blinding Strike to lower Fionn Mac Cumhaill’s accuracy as a cheaper alternative.

If Cironup runs out of Mana, then swap him out for one of the alternative demons down below, such as Naga.

Lilim

Lilim is one of the best Lightning casters you can have at this point in the game. She has a +3 Potential for the element and access to Zionga. She can really dish out some damage in this fight. Her only drawback is her weakness to Ice. If Fionn Mac Cumhaill targets her with Bufula +3, it’s going to hurt.

The best way around this is to simply Guard as her last action. Since you will be getting bonus turns via weakness exploitation, you should easily be able to get one attack and one guard off per turn.

Shiki-Ouji

Shiki Ouji is here for the tank factor. His damage isn’t great, but you can transfer Zio or Zionga onto him without much difficulty. His Physical resistance is the draw here. You want Fionn Mac Cumhaill to attack Shiki-Ouji because he simply won’t do enough damage to threaten him — even buffed.

Inheriting Taunt, or using Essence to transfer Taunt onto Shiki-Ouji, is the best way to run him. This will direct most of Fionn Mac Cumhaill’s attack toward him, and keep the rest of your party safe.

Alternatives

There are plenty of demons that can fill in here. Xuanwu is a beefy physical damage dealer, Mothman is an easily obtained Lightning caster, Naga has a good mix of Lightning and Physical damage. Heck, if you still have Oni in your party, he can easily replace Shiki-Ouji.

Preparing For Battle

Items

You want to pick up some Fire Dampers. These are very cheap at only 150 Macca each, and will completely negate Fionn Mac Cumhaill’s Magatsuhi turn. This is pretty huge. If you are low on Chakra Drops, these can be pretty handy in this fight too.

Essence Fusion

Like with Loup-Garou, you want to make sure Nahobino isn’t going to get one-shot by overwhelming physical damage. Both Oni and Shiki-Ouji Essence can be used to gain Resistance to Physical, and this alone will keep Nahobino out of trouble.

Battle Strategy

Provided you are prepared for the fight and have a decent set of demons on you, this fight should be pretty straightforward. Cironnup should be casting Cautious Cheer to keep your team buffed, or Blinding Strike to debuff. Shiki-Ouji should be using Taunt, with Zio/Zionga being a backup once Taunt is up.

Your damage comes from Nahobino and Lilim, however. Ruinous Thunder and Zionga should deal decent chunks of damage. You could also use Thunder Gems if you have them, if Mana is a concern.

Whenever Fionn Mac Cumhaill enters Magatsuhi, use Fire Dampers and get back to hitting him. Make sure you have some decent substitutions on standby in case Fionn Mac Cumhaill gets lucky and kills one of your demons with Mac an Luin +5.

Once you get the rhythm down, Fionn Mac Cumhaill should fall shortly after, allowing you to trundle into the next area.
